Wife got kicked out of MSF course 2 hours in

One guy actually squared off on one of the instructors in my class. It was rather strange, guy dropped his bike (think it was the 1st day) instructor went over to help. And next thing you know the student squares off on him telling him he'll kick his ass.

It's not a big deal. Just let it go. I got kicked out of the dorms in college, and half a dozen bars in Monterey County. It just shows you impressed someone.

I remember in my class a guy was booted for being <1min late to one of the PM classroom sessions. The ground rules and consequences were clear. Justice was swift. Want to guess the instructor? :laughing

BK

Oooooh I know the answer. :nchantr

I had the same instructor. Somehow I passed. :laughing

I'd prefer some sort of temporary solution that doesn't involve selling or buying motorcycles.

Does anyone rent some shitty bike to practice on in a parking lot by any chance?

I mean there are plenty of cheap as dirt bikes on CL. Just get a old 250 or something for $1200. I don't see the big deal if you are serious about her practicing.

No way, in a class I took back in 1997 :) there was an Asian chick that kept on dropping a bike time after time, she must have dropped it 6 or 7 times well she graduated ...... go figure.

What about buying something like this and taking her out to a parking lot for some drills. Then sell it. You won't lose any money on this.

EDIT: after reading more of the thread, I see others suggested this too and you don't want to buy a bike. In S. Cal I remember seeing an add for a guy renting a small bike for training/passing license test. It was in one of the local motorcycle papers you pick up at bike shops.

Maybe these people can help.

I think I recall that a drop was an automatic fail as well. (This was back in '83.) In my class there was an older woman, likely in her early 60's, who wanted to learn to ride in case her husband ever had any medical problems while they were traveling the US on their Wing. Problem was, the woman had never even learned to ride a bicycle. After a couple passes across the parking lot with the woman wobbling on the bike and three instructors with her (one pushing, two on either side of her), they politely suggested she learn to ride a bicycle and come back after she had some experience.

OP, between this and the Sink thread about the brakes on your car, I think your wife needs some basic level education in the concept of smooth inputs to the vehicle controls.

I'm not really sure how to teach this, but if her driving habits translate into riding, she is likely to hurt herself or somebody else.

MSF instructors were pretty lenient in my class:

-Small gal drops bike twice and leaves it on ground engine running and walked away crying "I QUIT!" Instructor pleaded for her to stay and keep trying.

-Older experience rider (17 years-no license) came in all cocky like he knew his sh*t. Drops bike and instructors used him for an example of how everyone thinks they can ride until it's time to do slow maneuvers-Passed!

-Elderly lady being a pillion for close to 30 years wanted to go solo. Instructors initially questioned her ability to even keep the bike upright at a standstill-Passed!

So to me, other than her just dropping/stalling the bike, they must have seen something in her ability to maneuver a bike that's very detrimental to her safety if she went out on the street. And maybe felt it was in her best interest (safety-wise) if she maybe practiced a little more, or at least gain a little more confidence before trying again.

As others have said, this wasn't an MSF course, it was. Total Control course.

Obviously I wasn't there, but I suspect that there was more to it than just dropping the motorcycle. Dropping the bike is not an immediate dismissal. Never was in the MSF course either (except during the eval/test).

I've always been confused with Ridercoaches and Instructors that are unable to teach someone how to ride, or operate a clutch. It is very rare to find someone that is unteachable. It is our responsibility to adjust our style in a manner to help them learn.

Wow. That is stellar. A big :thumbup

No kidding...big props for the offer! :thumbup

When I took the MSF 3 years ago, a guy was dismissed early on the 2nd day because he still didn't seem comfortable on the bike (almost every exercise involving a turn would be a foot down near drop/lowside).

I hope this wasn't answered previously but what sort of bikes did they have out on the range?
