Women's Handball Players Are Fined for Rejecting Bikini Uniforms

I’m assuming they signed a contract agreeing to wear a certain uniform and now are trying to get out of that requirement, having been emboldened by recent events.

Sex sells

I think a sports uniform should be designed such that it does not hinder performance while avoiding undue attention to the athlete. The focus should be on the athlete’s ability and performance, not their appearance.
At the risk of sounding like a prude I think little girls in our society are allowed/encouraged to wear skimpy clothing at a young age so by the time they are young women they can’t see how sexualized they’ve become. This might partially explain why so many women’s sports teams haven’t cried foul until now.

That’s just more chicks NOT in the kitchen, amiright?

She said chick

I think the only rules should be based on either hindering (or potentially enhancing) performance in an unfair way. How much attention the outfit draws either because of a sexy design or just bright colors should be completely up to each individual athlete to choose (or a decision agreed to by the team for team sports where they want one uniform design)

I think you are wrong about framing girls as unaware that they are sexualized.
Quite the contrary I think that most girls, as they grow up, are acutely aware of how their bodies are sexualized in society, but many also don't see it as something that they have the agency over. For these women playing beach handball, there is no way in hell they all don't know that they are being deliberately sexualized with these rules, No way in hell they don't see the double standard. It's just something that women, unfortunately, have gotten so used to in society that most of them don't think they can fight it, or don't want the attention that will come with fighting it.

And, though I joke about it, I really do think that men should be able to choose to wear clothes as skimpy as the bikinis or even more so without judgement. Women are oversexualized in society to the point that many feel they have to flaunt their sexuality. On the opposite end, men are undersexualized in society to the point that many men don't feel they can be physically, sexually attractive.

And some women athletes exploit it to their advantage building huge fan bases because they are awesome athletes and also hot as hell. Professional kite boarders and other water sport athletes are a great example. Good for them.

I can see an issue with not having a choice because in order to play x sport at the top level you have to show some skin. Let them fight to change that. It will change. However, I don’t think the organization whose business model depends on skin should be “cancelled” because they have an opposing view and interests they likely have a fiduciary duty to protect.

To me , post #39 in this thread says it all with that photo. Crop tops/bikini bottoms for the women. Shorts/tank tops for the guys but they are playing the same sport. I’m just surprised so many sports women accept that they are being put on display. It seems to me either they know and don’t care, or they’re just oblivious to their exploitation.

I think they know it and embrace it and many of them love it.

However, it removes choice for those that don’t like it and of course has other indirect implications.

It’s not like the Norwegian Federation hasn’t tried to get the rules changed. Allegedly, since 2006, the Norwegian Handball Federation has been campaigning to change the uniform requirements, but “nothing has happened” said the head of the federation, Kare Geir Lio, per The New York Times.

They need to just hush up and play sportsball in their underpants until they're no longer hot, then go get pregnant somewhere.

My older sister played college volleyball. I went to the games, not just to watch her.

Trust me, most women love showing off. But yes, there should be a choice to wear more modest clothing. Then again, uniforms were meant to all look the same. Bikini/spandex != baggy shorts.

How is this exploitation exactly?

If this is something that sells the sport then it makes sense.

Sex is in basically every part of our society, I'm not clear on why there is such a holywar against it in sports particularly. If this was an outfit in a music video people would say how awesome it is and how empowering it is for the woman, no? We literally had this thread about some entertainers a few short months back.

If I decide on my own that I want to wear a banana hammock thong and wave my dick around, no issue with that, it's my decision to make.

If my boss tells me that they want me to wear a banana hammock thong and wave my dick around, that's a big issue.

It's not about what people are wearing or doing, it's about whether they are deciding, or someone else is deciding for them.

Dude uses the exact definition of exploitation while asking how this is exploitation... :facepalm

Can't make this stuff up. :laughing
