Workplace Snitches

Say you work in a place of rampant snitchery. I don't mean about shit getting stolen or stuff like that, I mean people that point out someone else coming in a few minutes late, or pointing out everyone else's mistakes. Except theirs.

Do you;

A). Beat their ass (snitches get stitches).

B). Join in the fun and start snitching them out.

C). Don't say shit (I ain't no snitch, bro!).

D). Have a little heart to heart with them and nicely explain how they are making a grave mistake.

E). Quit.

it appears management encourages us underlings to rat each other out.

Wow. When/if it's brought up I think I'd just say "I'm not going to be a part of that." If that doesn't get you any respect, nothing will.

I'm a big advocate in doing the right thing, however, if I feel someone is doing something wrong then I would confront that person first. For instance, there is this LAZY ass Soldier in our unit who shows up to work late, always makes excuses to not have to do shit, she tries to get out of doing physical training (PT) and uses her daughter as an excuse to have to "leave early" because she has to pick her up from school. And the worst part, she is a Non-Comissioned Officer, in which she is held to some of the highest standards of professionalism in the military.

Now, several of us confronted her and said you need to act more professional, get your shit together, etc... we gave her several chances. The next step is to "snitch" to her supervisor.

But to answer your question OP, I'd confront that person and say "Hey if you have a problem with me, I'd appreciate it if you brought it by me first rather than going directly to my supervisor. Give me a chance to correct myself or something of that nature blah blah blah"
But this is military and we have a different way of thinking than most civilian jobs.

All you folks that say quit/get a new job...you really think that this is so rare that the next job couldn't possibly have another asshole doing the exact the thing?

Just about every shop I've worked at, there's always at least one "bus driver" covering up their own inadequacy but pointing out everyone else's.

All I can suggest is that if you're an exceptional employee and bring a skillset that would be difficult to replace...ain't got much to worry about. If someone on my crew went crying to the boss with "ha ha big shot mr. Rob the foreman left a drain plug loose" they'd pretty much give me a pass. And then they'd tell me that so and so tried to throw me under the bus so I could deal with that how I saw fit.

I know this doesn't apply to the OP......
but anyone that uses the word, "snitches"
or the phrase, "snitches get stitches"
is probably a punk hunk of poop....
...I don't know, maybe I'm wrong?,

Does anyone else have an opinion about that?

I am just saying that not every workplace is like that. I think Dr. Evil already mentioned it; if this is tolerated, it likely is rooted at the top levels of management. I've worked a couple jobs where management has zero tolerance and it is stopped immediately, or there are consequences, and most importantly, is followed through on by those who challenge executive leadership.

True, the grass always looks greener on the other side, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have its own problems. No matter where you go, there will be uncomfortable circumstances you'll need to deal with.

+1

If the management is encouraging it, then there's no discussion if you wish to stay. They aren't doing anything wrong as far as the company is concerned. I don't think I could work in that type of environment

My opinion is that you're wrong.

Even (some) police respect (to a degree, circumstantially...) somebody who doesn't snitch....:2cents

A person who snitches is the biggest piece of shit in my opinion.*

*There is a MASSIVE difference between types of snitching, for example: Robbed a bank with your boys and you turn state to avoid a lengthy sentence? You belong in a ditch. You help the detectives with information on what kind of car ran down those kids in a DUI hit-and-run? You belong in a ditch if you DON'T you help them. :2cents

C) Don't be a fuck up and you have nothing to fear. That sort of classless act tends to dig its own grave.

Thanks for your comment & I'm glad you differentiated the use of the word.
I guess it matters in what context the word is being used,

if a group of boys beats up another kid for no reason & he reports it, he'll be labeled & targeted as a snitch....

...or a person looks out their window as house robbers are speeding away from the neighbors, they phone in the license plate # & the robbers are apprehended......
They later vow to get even with the snitch....

my comment was describing the use of the word by those kind of people.

Its just a term that is in common use. And I don't point fingers at people.

I used to work with somebody like that. I found that just the threat of an ass kicking was enough to modify their behavior for the better. :thumbup

i wouldn't call them 'snitches' at work...

i would say more like a tattletale ....still in the immature mindset trying to be the teacher's favorite pet cuz they don't get attention any other way from others..the less people want anything to do with them, the more drama they create just to have some sort of attention...

This is the highest paying, best benefits job I've ever had. The snitching isn't necessarily aimed at me, I'm not doing anything I shouldn't be doing, just got a great review last week and a bonus, but......it appears management encourages us underlings to rat each other out. As for now, I don't participate, but it appears plenty of people do...

I should explain. I've got a bit of a....um....jail background. I don't point fingers at anyone. Its been over a decade, and I'm not ever going back, but some things stick with you.....
Putting my poli-sci degree to work... It's a control issue. If you're too busy watching your own back and trying to back stab others at your level, you won't have time to be plotting against management. If you want a great real life example of this, do some research on how Hitler compartmentalized his Nazi administration and set the various factions against each other so they'd be too busy to go after him.

but......it appears management encourages us underlings to rat each other out

That was a common practice with the US postal service......
...but later proven to not be such a good idea.

That's interesting. Hadn't ever crossed my mind. Very devious. Maybe subconsciously? You'd have to be pretty messed up in the head, as you've pointed out, to consciously come up with that strategy.

You guys have got some very good, interesting points. There are some very fucked up people out there. Myself, at work, and most probably you guys too, I'm thinking, "Should I have a Carne Asada, or Al Pastor burrito for lunch? Shall I put on a set of Q2s this time, or PR3s?". Meanwhile, Bunky over on the next row of milling machines is thnking , "That bastard over there has bought 5 motorcycles in the last year, and pays someone to wash his dog. All I've got is this old Pinto, I'll show him. Boss, boss, he was 35 seconds late coming back from lunch, and I heard he goes to the casino and worships Jimmy Page......wah, wah, wah....."
