Worst First Car for a 16yo boy

He has no job to get to nore any other real obligations which is exactly my point. Get it out of your system early, I feel bad for kids that drive 3 year old Honda civics to school. They'll never have any cool stories to look back on.

Cool stories? Like a friend of mine catching air in his Audi 5000 and slamming down so hard it rips the exhaust system off? :laughing

Meh, I want to high school in Danville, knew a lot of kids that drove Jaguars, BMW's, Corvette's, Mustangs, etc. I remember one girl that wrecked her Mustang, one week later she was driving a newer model stang. Must be nice having rich parents.

I can think of a lot of terrible cars for a 16yo boy, but my neighbors surprised me with a selection they recently made for their soon to be 16yo. Early 2000s M5. The kid plays with it everyday (starting it up, washing it and driving down the street). He even pulled off the silencers so now it sounds like a Nascar...if I was his age, I most certainly would be doing all of those things. I would also be drifting it like crazy and figuring out how fast it goes. I figure it will be totaled within 6 months. Seems like a nice kid and I sure would hate to see him get hurt, but it sure does seem like a terrible idea.

That or he going to just lunch the overly complex motor and start coming by my house to borrow tools or get advice on fixing it.

Is it me just being old?
I grew up in a neighborhood where there were a group of kids that had ridiculous first cars as well. A good of them totaled them within a year as expected.
Me, I had this set of awesome wheels back in the 90s, 1988 civic hatchback. No power steering too, which was tons of fun in the winter time in the midwest :laughing

There's no debate...that M5 wins the worst first car.

I had this, which eventually fell apart due to neglect :laughing.

Never doubt the creativity and insanity of a teenager behind the wheel. :D

My kid will get a POS. If she can prove she's responsible enough to take care of it then she'll get something nicer. If she wants something fancy, she can get a job and buy it her own damn self.

Mine will be able to buy whatever he can afford, if he can't afford it he can drive the boring family car. No way I'm buying my kid a car unless my current living situation at the time makes it absolutely necessary.

My first car was a 1980 Camaro. It was as the Berlinetta trim, with a gutless V6. It was supposed to be a 73 Firebird Formula 400 that we'd build together, but after my sister trashed the sweet 70 Camaro RS my dad (and I) had built for her, he was over building sweet cars for kids. But the berlinetta had a working 8-track so that was cool.

He offered me his 70 SS Chevelle wagon - 454/m22 rock crusher, cowl induction hood red with black racing stripes...I hella regret opting to build my own (especially since it didn't work out) but I probably would have wound up in a tree with a bunch of friends like that M5 kid.

I bought my first car. 1997 Camaro V6... it wasnt fast, but it wasnt the slowest car... Most of my friends had nice cars as well...

Kids will either be responsible, dumb or a little of both. My buddy had a Pontiac Sun Fire and got into more trouble doing 180's than I ever did in my Camaro...

I agree with the OP, too much power for a 16 year old will often lead to tragedy and certainly has the potential for it.
Not very bright for parents to do that.

I had an old Volvo wagon, a '71 145, and I still managed to wrap it around a telephone pole, but somebody else hit me.

I had street motorcycles in those years, so I did learn a a fair amount respect for speed (and the possibility of pain).

(Below) The driver of this car, an Infinity G37 when it started out that morning, was driven by a 20 y/o, so I can see why insurance might be a little on the high side for some of the "sportier" cars.

This was on a fairly strait part of Hwy 1 near the Carpenter intersection, a slightly damp morning in May, I think. Other than speeding, not sure what the kid was doing.

When I was a teenager, I worked full time, saved up my money and bought a'79 Camaro V8 as my first car. Shennaigans in that car are legendary to this day amongst my oldest of friends. I kept crashing it until we had to tow it out of the yard. :laughing
