WTB best all in one gaming desktop for my son

Build it yourself and learn a good skill with your son! It will be half the cost and your son will understand how it works and what will need to be upgraded later on.

Don't worry about it. They are easier to put together then you think and if you can tinker on your bike then you can tinker on a computer.

I beg to differ on building it yourself being cheaper. I've built one myself and it ended up around the same price as what I would have paid at Fry's. You don't need no fancy case, fancy PSU, fancy motherboard. Just buy from a pre assembled tower from Tiger Direct with a SSD, and buy the video card separately and install yourself, very easy.

I totally disagree with this because a "fry's" system is going to cut corners on stuff like the front bus speed of your motherboard or the speed of your ram. Yea it may play video games but it isn't going to play them on an Ultra video setting.

However I totally agree with this because if you don't know what you are doing with computers this is a great option.

I'll build it for you for free if you want to come up to Oakland. If you son is a big gamer, he might already know how to build his own, so it may be worth asking. I suggest picking up a bare bones kit from Tigerdirect or Newegg and then just adding whatever components it's missing.

I'm not going to try and fool you by saying it's easy to do yourself. If you're not into that kind of thing, it's intimidating, and if you aren't careful, you can ruin a 300$ processor by accident. It's similar to a mechanically inclined person saying that changing a clutch is easy. For them, it is, but if you're not, you should not attempt it. You can probably learn, but I don't know if that's something you want to invest the time into. There's a big reason why companies exist who do nothing but build custom computers for people

Quit stealing my thunder, I said I'd do it for $100 :laughing

If money were no object I'd opt for a high-end gaming laptop.

My current rig was pretty beastly a few years ago. It's loaded with fans and hard drives and accent lighting. It's just not portable enough for LANs. There are some seriously powerful laptops out there. Don't hate :p

Show me a laptop that can run BF4 on max settings. Oh yea, that's right, it doesn't exist. :twofinger

Build it yourself... it's SUPER easy.. just youtube it. You can make a BEAST comp for less than $1000

Even better yet, build it with your son. You would both appreciate the machine more if you learned how to build one together. Hell, it might even become a hobby lol.

Building a computer is like putting lego blocks together.. everything is pretty much plug n play.. (with a few screws)

Things you'll need (research brand and models to your liking):

- Motherboard
- CPU (processor, get intel core i7)
- RAM (go for DDR3 or higher)
- HDD (hard drive, SATA 7200 or SSD if you can afford)
- GPU (graphics card, get something mid-ranged, GeForce line)
- Case
- Cooling system (fans or liquid cooled, usually comes with case)
- Power supply (go for 1000W if you can afford)
- Sound Card (you can get away with onboard)
- Software (operating system, don't get windows 8)
- Wiring

I'm sure I'm leaving one or two things out, but honestly, that is it! Youtube how to put it together and presto.. you have a decent computer!

Main thing is researching what brands, models and specs that will work harmoniously together. You don't want to buy a $700 GPU and leave everything else shitty.. your computer will bottleneck it out. Just do some research, it honestly isn't that hard. I put my first computer together years ago and I've NEVER bought another computer since.. I always build.

I need to get a gamer computer for my son... I don't have unlimited funds and I don't know enough about them to not screw up big time lol... :teeth
He plays online team games big time.
Manufactures, best deals, get it now info with a link would be great!!???

"Online team games" what's he playing? First person shooters like Battlefield and Call of Duty, or MOBAs like League of Legends and Dota?

Knowing the kinds of games he plays will have a big influence on what you should buy - if its the latter, skimming a bit off the CPU and GPU and investing in quality peripherals like a good customiseable mouse and a mechanical keyboard will probably mean a lot more to him.

If the above question has you completely bewildered, here's a quick visual comparison:

MOBA:

Aren't these games experienced better on consoles? I have been meaning to buy a PlayStation since the first one came out. I think I will get PS4 for Granturismo 6.

Yes, and no. On one hand you don't have to care about HW upgrades, and other issues, you just get your box and play. On the other for games like FPS games controls suck.

I've never been able to do FPS games on a console, but I'm a cranky old Counterstrike guy. :afm199

As others have said, yes and no. With consoles you know you'll be getting a standard experience. The same game on a PC can be better or worse, depending on your set up. I tend to prefer mouse & keyboard combos for nearly every game, but controllers aren't terrible either. You can learn to work with them.

The biggest advantage of a PC is the updatability. If a new game comes out and you want to play it, you might only need to update your GPU, but if a new console comes out, you're stuck on it until you upgrade.

That being said, a top of the line GPU is often similar (or more) in cost to a brand new console.

Also... free online play, really cheap games on Steam

and pirated games lol
