you wear a $700 helmet, but you bought FRANK THOMAS leathers...

I'm fairly positive which 'unmentionable' store you're referring to, and that is exactly why I don't go in there unless I have to. The pre-teen people behind the counter generally have the IQ of a rock and are usually more interested in talking amongst themselves about what carbon fiber or chrome piece they plan to put on their bike next, rather than help you. I've found a local shop that employs adults, and I take my business there.

To the OP, your response should have been "yeah, but your folks shelled out a few hundred grand to feed and clothe your ass for 18 years and now you work behind the counter at Cycle Gear..."
:rofl:rofl

that sales person is a dumbass.. unless you are buying those icon vest thingies to wear over your sweat shirt who gives a fuck what anyone things. its all made in the same crappy place in asia where the workers get paid like 2 cents an hour

haha @ all your red dot thingos. i think that's the most red dots i've seen yet! at least you're making an impression! :thumbup

I had a FT jacket and gloves, both held up in a ~10mph crash no prob. I was wearing Scorpion gloves and jacket when I went down at ~60mph and it also held up perfectly (except for the whole sharp object ripping my glove and finger open...but no glove on the market could protect against that). I agree that you pay for the name in many cases, and generalizing all inexpensive gear as "crap," without any empirical evidence, is just asinine

I just ordered the other day the FT xti 1 piece suit. It also came with the xti gloves for free ($129.00 value :D). glad to hear many people have good news with their products but we all have our different experiences and opinions. I like the look of the suit i ordered and i look forward to trying it out and putting it to the test when that time ever comes.

I've owned a lot of gear of the years and I have to say I've never been as happy with any of it as I am with my Dainese 1pc Leathers. $800 for a awesome set on sale.... go see Dan in the SF store, might still have some left!

I bought a FT 1 piece suit ($220) and ride track only. Crashed twice in it; one a low side and another 90+mph highside. Held up great with no tears or busted up sticthing and saved my ass. My current suit is a FT and for the price, it holds up just fine and I prefer the styling over the rest. If I were to spend over $600, I would buy a custom Helimot suit so there is no middle ground for me. What ever leathers you buy, you still have to custom tailor it to your body so I spend the extra $250 on a custom suit instead of paying extra $ for a brand name.

don't care what other people think as long as it doesn't hinder my happiness or hurt anybody

frank thomas is big in europe. own a frank thomas jacket and tested it unfortunatly and it held up well and so did i. oh well

theyre thin and they tear easily in a crash. i do think you get what you pay for. i have an 1100 astar 1 piece and its held up great in 2 crashes and 1 of them was bad. i do agree with him though, these top brand companies like astar and dianese dont get the rep they do for no reason
I've been down in FT, AStars & Spidi the leathers that ripped & tore were the Astars. I don't know about the new FT but the suit I had held up through 3 low sides.

Yeah I think A-star and Die Nay Say make their name and reputation on the race track, then sell you cheap stuff at a premium. I have not real experience, but they all look the same at Cycle Gear (where you can see all three side by side). As with anything, get what fits best and doesn't have a KNOWN issue. You will always find people that had failures in every kind of gear and some that swear by them. Pick protection levels for the crash but buy what fits comfortably enough that you will ALWAYS put it on!

how does it work if u wear a ~$2000 suit, but only a $219 helmet?

I love the big-money helmets....when they are priced as Marked Down or Clearance, my two favorite brand names. :laughing

because it works just as well as a $700 helmet

Sponsership, that's how. :laughing

Me, I've crashed a couple of times, but never at speed. I have textile pants and leather jacket for the street, with Daytona boots and helimot gloves, and an Arai.

And then I have Arai/helimot/helimot/daytona for the track.

I've seen plenty of friends crash in everything from A* gear at 80mph, to FT gear at lower speed. Never seen a significant injury from anyone wearing gear. The occasional minor rash, bruising, etc, but in all the accidents i've seen on the track, no one has ever gone home with massive damage due the failure of their leathers. Even the people crashing in duct taped leathers.

The worst accident I've personally seen was a friend going through a barbed wire fence and cartwheeling his bike off the edge of a dropoff at around 30mph. He had the most damage from his sunglasses going into his face. Leathers were fine, helmet was torn up, but he was alright.

ok so did anybody google this?

here are a couple of links to consider

http://www.mcnews.com/mcnews/articles/helmet.htm

http://www.webbikeworld.com/Reviewed-motorcycle-products/Products.htm

I can say that i started with a hjc, it did not fit well but was safe. got a screaming deal on a agv, crashed and didnt damage the helmet (amazing but true). The AGV feels a hell of a lot more comfortable and has less sight obstruction, it does weigh almost 1 pound more though.

here are the dot standards that all helmets are tested by.

http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-helmets/DOT-standard.htm

that being said, cheaper helmets are tested with a single impact, more pricey helmets are built to withstand the multiple impacts involved with most motorcycle crashes, so a more $ helmet will provide better protection..

without even checking id bet my ass that leathers are the same. I started in teknique and now wear A*.. but i got them off the clearance rack, never would have had the money otherwise.. got my 2 piece A* for 650 otd with the boots..
