10 feet?
25 yds sure, but there's not much spread at 10 feet.

shotgun....sawed off (18")....no choke....birdshot....at 10'.....i think the spread would be about the size of a salad plate.....and would be terribly *exciting* to the bad guy on the receiving end.....and would act as a serious deterrent regardless of injury (or lack of)......IMHO...

BTW - I'm guessing on the birdshot spread....anyone actually *know*?

#4 lead shot at 10' will do some serious damage and if anyone says different there full of shit. And your guess about the salad plate is about right. And im experienced with shotguns been waterfowl and upland bird hunting for 30 years. And i have never aimed a shotgun. Both eyes open for bird hunters.

I've got an 18.5 inch cylinder bore and I can tell you for a fact that the pattern from any birdshot I've ever used is a LOT smaller than a dinner plate at ten feet.

Think more like 2-3 inches across. That's shooting at paper, not at birds or anything where I have to guess.

I voted that guns should be carried carefuly and responsibly, but are still paper weights.

I don't get the facination with guns, but it's an American right to own and carry as long as you follow the law. Even so, it strikes me as bit paranoid to think you need to carry INSIDE your house. Have one loaded and stashed somewhere easy to retrieve if needed? Sure. But...carrying on you while you watch tv with your woman? I don't get that. Where's the threat? Afraid some dude will just *poof* appear in your living room out of no where, threatening to rape your woman and steal your wallet?

where i live is 3 differents floors. i spend a lot of time in the lower floor. girlie cant use the gun b/c she cant rack the slide back. sure i could keep the gun in the upstairs (retreat) room... but that means if shit goes down i need to climb 2 seperate flights of stairs to even get to the damn thing. carrying on me is the only reasonable solution so far as i can tell

i really think the chances of shit going down in the house are slim, but if it did, having 3 stories, if i'm on the bottom floor and gun is on the top, it is useless

To be completely honest with you, if I felt threatened enough to justify carrying inside my own home...and naming certain rooms accoriding to their purpose if I was attacked (retreat room), I would MOVE. TODAY. We could all carry guns, as is our right, but...why put yourself in the postion of feeling like you need to? Don't tell me you can't move out of Oakland. If you want it, you can do it.

i'm pretty confident that if i lived in Piedmont, i'd still carry in my house.

its not so much that i live in oakland, it is simply:
rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Name a handgun that can be fired as accurately and rapidly as a 1911, with a cartridge of equivalent momentum.

How about the same cartridge?

Don't get me wrong, I love 1911s, but for day to day use in .45ACP, I'd roll P220 (or P245, no longer made). The SIGs are just modified BHP designs, and plenty fast :)

That said I'm actually considering acquiring a piece of Teutonic Tupperware. I don't like sweating all over my nice guns in the desert. Something I never throught I'd do...

If the Glocks and Sigs are so great, why aren't people winning shooting competitions with them?

Glocks...please. Glock triggers are shit. I've owned a Glock and I own a 1911. It's the difference between banging a drunk girl you found in a parking lot at 2:05am and dating a model. Either way you're getting laid, but come on.

2008 Steel Challenge National Champion
Limited Division

2008 Light & Laser Invitational Champion

2008 Winchester World Challenge Champion

2007 USPSA National Champion
Production Division

2007 Tactical Shooting Association National Champion

So the guy won obscure competitions, or competed in classes that favor .40 S&W.

I couldn't find commentary on which pistol he's using for these competitions, or which loads...but a 135gr, or 155gr, or even a 180gr .40 is not the same as a .45 ACP.

Is someone winning competitions with a Glock 21 or other .45 ACP?

CZ75B, CZ75B SA if you really want single action only...with a 124gr 9mm JHP +P, it has the same energy as a 230gr JHP .45ACP

And I'm willing to bed the CZ recoils less, making follow-up shots easier and more accurate. Besides, you should be measuring wound volume, not energy or momentum. :teeth I have a nice excel spreadsheet on it at home, I can post a nice graph I made when I get back :p

Have you not shot both? What's the point of comparing pistols if you haven't shot both?

I don't know that you can estimate wound volume with a spreadsheet.

I don't go for "energy." You can hit some dude with a 400 ft lbs worth of welding laser and it's not going to punch a hole through his heart. A 9mm with equivalent energy of a .45 is much more prone to deflection, expansion failure, etc.

Nothing beats a big heavy bullet for making sure the job gets done.

To quote a random female Marine in training, when asked if the recoil of a .45 ACP bothered her:

"The recoil lets you know it's working."
