I can't believe I watched, ok skimmed, that video! He is a character. And better prepared for this trip than I assumed going in. What an adventure!
One of my post-HS jobs was working with my dad on an offshore drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico. Crazy dangerous work, particularly during storms. Much respect for the ocean.

You can (at least used) rent a Sea Doo in, I guess Long Beach, and take it across the channel to Catalina.
Always wanted to do that, just unsure how exhausting in might be -- it's a long ride out and back.
