Weather: Dry-Wet.

The first free practice session at the 'new' Assen circuit has ended with Kawasaki's Shinya Nakano setting the fastest time after a rain-hit 90-minute exploratory run, but the real drama came when Valentino Rossi crashed heavily early on.

The Doctor fell from his YZR-M1 machine at high-speed approaching the final chicane and had to be stretchered off to the medical center.

Early reports from track-side indicated that Camel Yamaha's Rossi had broken his wrist and sustained injuries to his chest and ankle. He attended a Dutch hospital for further examinations, and as yet there is no official word on his condition and his further participation in this weekend's race meeting.

Nakano's time of 1:39.619 is some 19 seconds faster than Rossi's 2005 pole-lap, following major reconstruction of the North loop, which reduced the overall length of the lap from 3.7-miles to 2.8-miles.

Super Shinya was followed home by Suzuki's John Hopkins and LCR Honda's Casey Stoner, the trio split by 0.412 seconds.

The session started dry, but the clouds had gathered during the first 45 minutes, and soon after, the heaven's opened and the riders returned to pit-lane, in the hope that the wet weather would abate. Sadly, the rain continued to fall and the session was effectively finished.

Injured riders Marco Melandri (20 laps) and Loris Capirossi (14 laps) showed why motorcycle racers are a hardy bunch, Melandri only cleared to ride in Holland yesterday following the accident at the start of the Catalan GP.

The weather forecast for the rest of the day is mixed, so fingers crossed that the second free practice hour remains dry. That session is due to begin at 2pm, local time at the Circuit Van Drenthe.

Update: Rossi fit to ride at Assen.

Update: Rossi fit to ride at Assen.

MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi has been passed fit to ride at Assen, despite being hospitalised following a heavy morning fall.

The Italian superstar was thrown from his Camel Yamaha at high speed on only his sixth lap of the first free practice session, which had been extended to 1hr 30mins due to recent track modifications, and was taken to the trackside Clinica Mobile and then on to Assen hospital.

Full medical checks at the hospital revealed that Rossi hadn't - as initially feared - broken his right wrist, but has sustained hairline fractures to his right hand and left ankle, plus chest bruising and a haematoma on his right elbow.

Rossi then appeared in the Camel Yamaha pits just as this afternoon's second free practice session started - already wearing his leathers - and was soon out on track trying to regain lost ground ahead of Friday's qualifying session and Saturday's race.

After a nightmare start to the 2006 season, Rossi - the reigning five-times MotoGP world champion - has won the last two GPs to close the points gap from a low of 43 to 29 behind Repsol Honda's Nicky Hayden prior to this weekend's eighth round of the championship.

Rossi has previously stated that he must finish on the podium at all remaining races to have a chance of defending his crown.

The British Grand Prix takes place just one week after Assen.

Wow, the drama that is MotoGP 2006.

It appears the winner of the 2006 MotoGP championship will be the rider who survives. Consistency could very well be the key. The win or crash racing that Melandri does might not be the most efficient way to win the championship. The series currently is playing right into Hayden's style......

Go Nick..........:teeth

Jesus Christ, is he trtying to give me a heart attack.

What I think is weirdest of all is that a Kawasaki and a Suzuki are the two fastest bikes so far. :teeth

Unfortunately, it never seems to mean anything come race time. So it's pretty much meaningless. :(

Now he has an excuse for when Hayden beats him. If you are an American how about you try rooting for an American instead of jumping on the Rossi band wagon?:p

Capirossi '50-50'.

Loris Capirossi's manager Carlos Pernet believes that his rider only has a 50-50 chance of being fit for Saturday's Dutch TT, after struggling with breathing problems on the opening day at Assen.

The full extent of Capirossi's chest injuries, sustained during the six-rider turn one accident at Barcelona last Sunday (top picture), only became fully apparent once the Ducati Marlboro rider was out on track today.

After struggling in this morning's session, the Italian underwent mesotherapy pain treatment for the afternoon outing - but even that wasn't enough and it remains to be seen if the current championship number two can race.

"I'm not feeling at all good," confessed Loris, who set the 16th fastest Thursday time, 2.5secs from the top. "I didn't expect to feel so much pain and to find it so difficult to ride the bike. Once I started riding I realised the situation was much more difficult than we had expected. If the race was today there would be no way I could do it. My chest is very painful and although the mesotherapy and physio that the Clinica Mobile has given me has helped, it doesn't solve the problem. My intention is to ride tomorrow but maybe I will need more pain-killers. The race will be really hard but I won't give up. Now I am going to see Dr Costa in the Clinica to see what we can to do improve the situation."

Meanwhile, team-mate Sete Gibernau left Barcelona's Dexeus hospital at 12.15 today, following Tuesday's operation to plate his broken left collarbone sustained in the same accident. On Monday the Spaniard will begin rehabilitation and resume training with trainer Daniel Sune.

With Gibernau absent, Pramac d'Antin rider Alex Hofmann has been handed a dream factory Ducati ride for Assen - and got to grips with his new equipment by setting the 15th fastest day one lap time around the heavily revised circuit.

"I need all the time I can get to get used to my new machine package, so it was tough losing so much time to rain this morning," said the German. "Today I worked at regaining my feeling for Bridgestone tyres and we also worked on ignition mapping and other aspects of set-up. I probably only started to feel really okay during my last three laps this afternoon, I was starting to get into it, enjoy it and feel comfortable on the bike, but I still need more time to feel fully at home. I worked with Bridgestone in 2004 and 2005, so it's great to work with them again and to see how they've progressed.

"We started today with Sete's set-up but we're looking for some easier handling because the new Assen is so different to the old layout. I was such a fan of the old track that the new circuit is a big loss to me. Anyway, my aim is to keep getting stronger and keep progressing all the way to the last lap on Saturday," he declared.

here's FP2

crazy drama at 'give it to 'er in the' Assen........big opportunity for hayden as capi may not race, rossi didn't look at all like himself in FP2 and was languishing around 16th for much of the session!!! :wow .....big breathing problems for capi and melandri sure is looking a bit off as well.......for a while in the session, it was 'mericans 1, 2, 3 with edwards heading KR and hopper

big thumbs down to the track owners, though,.....they really ruined what was one of the best tracks in the word, and they did it before I got to ride on the old track :cry :cry

FROM DR. COSTA HIMSELF

Dr. Costa Updates Condition of GP Riders
melandri still in hospital
by staff
Monday, June 19, 2006
GP Doctor Claudio Costa has posted this update on the Clinica Mobile web site regarding the conditon of the riders injured in yesterday's MotoGP crash .

This morning, Loris Capirossi left the Catalunya General Hospital with a smile on his lips, despite still suffering pains to his chest and abdomen and with bruises all over his body after the battle that he had to fight the day before, at the MotoGP race start.

That smile symbolically lights up the road that goes from Barcelona to Assen: on the Dutch circuit surround by green fields, Capirossi will ride his Desmosedici again in just a few days, and will once again be chasing his dreams.

Marco Melandri is still hospitalised in the same clinic, in a room in the Intensive Care department. The early diagnosis of head injury was fortunately modified to concussion after the hospital scans: concussion means no damage to the brain, just amnesia.

Marco could not remember anything after the accident. His memory is coming back now, although he can only remember what happened until just before the start of that fateful race. His left clavicle dislocation is less serious than we had first thought; his arm muscular stretching is luckily only mild. Marco is still suffering a lot of pain in his neck region, after rebelling against the threat of paralysis. The rider is well treated by the Spanish doctors, gathered around his bed like priests around the altar where Marco is celebrating his own resurrection.

Yesterday, the gods that had allowed a terrible accident to happen had also foreseen that the 3 riders would be able to use the resources hidden in the hearts of all human beings. Perhaps, the gods are not entirely malevolent. And they always spare a look from above for motorcyclists, who love to play chess against risk, danger and death, and during this troubling game, even manage to smile to the lady in black.

Damn, it looks like Hayden really is the man to look out for now that some top players are hurt.
