Would a "last minute" trackday work?

For a couple of years now I've been thinking about hosting a "last minute" trackday at Thunderhill. We do occasionally have nice, sunny days in late January or early February when T-Hill has days available; and this year, possibly for the first time in years, there are even a few weekend days available.

So here is what I would love to see happen (is it possible?): First, T-Hill would have to agree to rent the track with just 5 days notice. Second, they would have to agree to rent the track fairly cheap (at least cheap compared to the normal weekend price). Third, they would have to agree to let us cancel if the weather turned at the last minute. At lastly, I would love to see around 50 riders come out for a 2-group day at about $150.

The days available that might work are this Sunday, Jan. 23rd, 2011; Saturday, Feb. 5th; and Sunday, Feb. 6th. If anyone is interested in attending (assuming a sunny day with a minimum high temp. of 58 or so), please post your email address in this thread or pm me your email address. I'll give T-Hill management a call and make sure this isn't just a pipe dream. And if all the stars are in alignment I'll shoot out an email on Thursday letting everyone know that the event is a go (assuming we have enough interest).

This would be the first ever dirtyD non-backwards trackday. Stranger things have happened!

======================================================================

We will be hosting a 2 group trackday on Saturday, Feb. 5th, 2011. The cost is $160 cash, $170 credit. If you want to attend, send me an email at dandenuzzo@aol.com

Ok, here's the list of riders I will be saving a spot for until 8:30 Saturday morning (if I don't hear from them by then and they're not at the track, their spot will be up for grabs). I'm posting an abbreviated version of your email address, so don't freak out if it's not your complete address:

Two things: One, if you've already sent me your email address and you don't see it on the list, I apologize. Please send it again. Two, if you're on the list but are not getting emails from me, I may have your address wrong. Your spot will still be saved, but if you want to get all the updates, please send me your email again and I'll try to get it right (check your spam folder first).

if you're only wanting 50 riders, why the 2 groups? why not just make it completely open? I'm interested either way... 1/23 or 2/6...

if you're only wanting 50 riders, why the 2 groups? .

You might be surprised to know just how many riders prefer run groups. And just how many riders don't like the idea of an "open" track. I don't think anyone wanting an open day would stay away because we ran 2, 30 minute sessions per hour; but many riders wanting the structure of run groups might stay away from an open trackday.

interesting... that does surprise me...

Haven't heard back from T-Hill management. It may be too late for this Sunday (too bad because the weather is looking really good). We'll try to shoot for the early Feb. weekend. I should know more in the next day or two.

The email addresses have been coming in slowly but surely. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm getting tired of riding my dirt bike. I would love to get the Gixxer out of the garage.

id be interested if it was OPEN track with no groups ...if thats the format then im in with 3 riders
I think if riders want groups then they need to stick to regular track days

The day would be a 2 group (A/B+, B-/C) event with 30 minute sessions. Riders could ride in both groups if they agree to ride at the pace and aggression level appropriate to the group.

And as for riders sticking to "regular track days"... this would be a regular track day in most ways.

Add me to the list.

Either open or group.. if its open, you fast guys can just practice passing me.

I will be wearing my red velvet jacket as I will be the valet in the corners.

Not me, 30 minutes is more then enough time to ride and work on your bike if need be, 30 minutes to relax and you still end up with more time on track then normal. The truth is most people who are out there running hard would have a tough time riding for 30 minutes anyway, shit I have a full load with 20 minutes.:rolleyes

I've done it. when everything's going great, it's not that hard. ktt's schools run 2 45 minute sessions and me and some other guys were out tooling around both sesssions back to back maybe taking 5 - 10 minutes break between each session. The first z2 open day, I pulled 26 laps one "session" and floated around 20 laps per most of the day. although, i did finish my day early...

I don't have a problem with 2 group sessions, just questioning if you're only expecting 50 riders, it doesn't make much sense to me to have a group format... just leave the track open... I'm itching to hit the track anyway, so whatever DirtyD chooses is perfectly fine with me...

interested for sure. Does the two group "ride at appropriate pace" rule apply to you too? :twofinger

If I can get my bike together in time I'd be interested.

This is not meant to disrespect Dirty's thread but I wanted to respond,

What's strange to me is how easily everyone is willing to expect 50 riders on track at the same time. These days it is normal to have that many riders and more per group when only 4 to 5 years ago when I first started doing this it was ALWAYS stopped at 30. I talked to a few of the providers before about the numbers and it was stated that 30 was the "safe" number at the time. I don't understand how it's possible to add 20 riders to the track 5 years later and the safety issue is any different? Anyone have an idea?

As for the day Dirty, I would love to go if I can get the bike back together in time, I decided to do some pre-season work at the wrong time I guess. Sorry for shitting in your thread it wasn't meant to be rude just a related topic came up.

30 riders at Laguna or Thunderhill is nothing, at Infineon it's a lot. At Miller you can't see them.

I don't see 50 riders in an open trackday a big deal. Lance likes 15 riders per mile groups, which at thill is 45 riders per group. not all riders are on the track at the same time. The biggest times for clumping is the first session of the day and lunch. either way, I can't give you an answer you're looking for except that times have changed. FWIW, 50 riders in an open trackday is way safer imo than having an equivalent amount of riders per group in a 3 group format day because of all the available track time. There's no rush in getting in your laps.
