Build Thread: 74 GT-750

found this soon to be deleted fork matrix covering the 90-03 years. thought it might help someone. Newer GSXR K series forks are shorter than the 90's stuff, 92-93 1100 will give me the length I need and may bolt right up to the 750 triple

my "clapped out" tire arrived yesterday, its a really decent tire with lots of life left in it, much more than I needed, it might actually see the road, thanks again Tri750 for the hookup

New parts for the Tank scooter arrive today so I'm expecting to see a sparking plug after lunch.

On the hunt for some steel plate that I can drill and tap to pull the cylinder, these things apparently have a tendency to meld themselves into the case and it requires heroic efforts to get the cylinder up and off. The welding class I'm taking at the college is going to help a lot with this project I think

Wiring harness design is moving along, lots of research that will help me in future projects as well. Winning.

Check the date on that tire, not sure, but I think it came off a bike that had been sitting for years. Don't risk messing up you or your bike for the price of a fresh tire.
Don't be one of those guys.

Back in the day, I had a guy, as a customer, who had a D Sports racer with a GT 750 engine in it. He installed an Ocelot 850cc kit and did very well in his class. He said that it made a massive difference in horse power over the stock bore and stock port work. I don't know if the company is still in business but if they are....

PIPES ARRIVED! Wasn't expecting them till late in the month, outstanding

I told him I didn't want the hangers installed, so that is the flat strap sitting on the newspaper that I'll use for making hangers. I need to figure out where/how I want the pipes installed and if I'm keeping the passenger pegs which is the standard Jemco pipe mounting point. I don't want to keep the passenger pegs, but I also don't want to be hasty in my decisions until I'm certain about what I'm doing - see below.

My woodstove will be happy to burn up all this mess:

Now just waiting on the electronic ignition from Germany (Austria?? dunno) to get the bike fired back up.

Got the rear tire mounted finally yesterday. I took a quick look at the sprocket offsets with some window screening channel I had laying around clamped to the rear sprocket. This is do-able. I'll need to mill the face of the sprocket carrier down a bit and I don't think I can get enough off to line up with the stock front sprocket location and still keep enough bite for the rear sprocket bolts in the carrier. Off to town to get 3' of narrow extruded box tubing that is actually straight to dial this in. So front offset seems necessary, just a matter of figuring out how much.

But I need to get the swingarm mounting finished up first and the tires aligned before I start getting the calipers out for determining the final sprocket offset numbers. I stupidly ground a face on the swingarm pivot bushing to get it a bit narrower to get the swingarm installed into the ground down pivot bosses. I was waaay too hasty with that decision, more grinding on the frame was needed, not grinding on the pivot bushing - so now I just had to spend $15 plus shipping to get a replacement and wait the week it will take for Partzilla to get it to me. Pendejo

So thinking the next steps out in order - I need to get the swingarm mounted so that I can use a rear stand, but can't begin to mount the swingarm until the pivot bushing replacement part arrives and I get the frame boss spacing ground out to final spec, then once its fit correctly take swingarm and assoc stuff up to Ernie my machinist. Then once the arm is mounted I need to figure out the shock attachment points onto the swingarm, cut up some 3/8" alum flat plate and once the mounting setup is marked up and finalized take the swingarm and mounting points to Mike at California Hot Rods (music alert), the guy is a witch on the TIG, to get the mount points finished. Then order the shocks and install them (I'll need to install new shock mounts up too, I need to extend the upper shock mount surfaces outward to compensate for the wider swingarm), and THEN cut the center stand mounts off the frame before I can begin to test fit the pipes. That should keep me busy for a few days

I might could save a you a dollar or three on Hagon shocks.
The markup is skinny, but it all helps.

Progressive Suspension too, but you have to be quick, we may close down for the duration of the winter.

My friend Dave said you have a lot of cool stuff at your place!

I'll be in touch then

"stuff" is him being graciously generous, but one mans junk...

Yo, where are we at? I'm afraid updates will be even more absent once our Z2 season starts!

I know, right?

the Accent ezcoil3 electronic ignition was shipped to the wrong address and was returned to Germany...

Pipes are hanging on the wall

Got the parts in to finish the swingarm install, just need to get the grinder back out for the final finish work to get the swinger centered correctly, but it's really dirty work that I'm not motivated for.

Bike is still on the stand, with the wiring harness is out. Did some sourcing of wire and made a list of needed connectors and crimping tools.

I've been dealing with trying to get the manny-bike R1 motor back into the saddle after the crank snapped at the Z2 thanksgiving event, it's been a nightmare frankly. Bought a spare R1 motor to throw in it and even that isn't going well. Making noises about selling it, really torn, it's just not making sense for me to be spending more money on it at the moment, sunken costs on a bike I really enjoy...

got the Accent electronic ignition in my mailbox finally week before last. It's sitting in the box still next to the bike. Nice looking piece of kit.

I erroneously shortened up a section of the GSXR swingarm pivot tubes while I was grinding on the frame pivots thinking that I'd get a good fit, but it messed the swinger alignment up in the end. I thought I had the right replacement piece but the microfiche tripped me up with the page layout and I ended up ordering the wrong part. So I got the new piece on order with Partzilla 2 days ago. Of course, the obligatory "there has been a delay in your order" email from them came in yesterday....

The current garage focus is in still dealing with the R1 working to get it back on the track, I had the 'new' motor in and the bike fired up early last Saturday am (HAPPY!!!) only to find that the water pump seal between oil and water pump was weeping out the piss hole in the bottom of the case. Major last minute let down prior to last Sunday at Sears w/Z2 (wah wah waaaah). So the seals and o-rings are on their way from Mach1 that should have been here today but the PO box was empty earlier this morning. I've got a spare pump assy that should be good to swap in, so that swap work will start tonight. The R1 goes to Englands Speed Shop for a day on the dyno on the 12th to get a PC3USB tune into it

The GT wiring harness is out and laid out on a board, I ordered a Hozan P-706 crimper to start a complete rewire of the harness. Logging some time on the EasternBeaver site looking for the connectors I want to use so that I can get an order in at some point soon.

I need to pull the GT cylinder assy to get it to a machine shop for a bore, and order a new top end from the R side cylinder being seized. Going to get the crank done at the same time as long as I've got it apart. Thinking I'm going to run it premix only, and put some sort of tap on the side of the oil tank and a small measuring can under the seat to measure out what I need each time at the pump. I just don't trust auto lube pumps.

But I'm hesitant to pull yet another thing into pieces in the garage - the R1 still has parts strewn about, and the Briggs 18hp twin in my field mower seized a rod to the crank due to a loose rod cap (1 bolt on the cap was just flopping around) and is in pieces awaiting a new crank and a rod to arrive. The grass in the fields is growing like crazy, so these 2 are the priorities in the triage at the moment

Since the GT will still run as it is right now, I'm mulling getting the bike all put together (jemcos, suspension swap, etc) while the motor is seized, and then firing it up to just be sure I've got it all working correctly (with the new minimum race harness that just fires the elect ign and the coils and charges the battery, but no lights/accessories) and then put it up on the stand and take the motor out of it and go through the motor at that point. Keeps the mess and number of projects in work to a minimum.

Still mulling running Mikuni Super BN carbs as phase 2 of the project. And still on the hunt for a few parts - a gas cap, a seat lock, and the radiator cover that goes on the front of the gas tank. I tried selling the stock pipes on ebay for $200 but no takers, I'm ready to give them away at this point, most of the stuff I've taken off is pretty rough due to weathering beating the bike took, so there is little value to be taken from all the things I don't need but am still tripping over in the garage.

Just seen this thread, awesome thread thanks for the good info, I have a 1976, GT 750, where did you get the pipes ??? Ever try a 3 into 1 chamber, I got one off ebay several years ago, I've ran the bike with it but never rode the bike yet with it so I don't know if it really works or if it will lose performance, my best friend since high school moved to New Mexico and found out he was dieing from cancer and wanted to play around with my 750 before he died so I hauled it down there for him to play with, well now he's gone so I need to go back to New Mexico and bring it back

Jemco - http://jemcoexhaust.com/

Ever try a 3 into 1 chamber

no, no interest, from my understanding of pipes and the harmonics involved it wouldn't be something I'd be interested in

sorry to hear about your friend, but hope you can redo your bike somehow in memory of him.

in other news, starter on the truck just went out, I'm feeling like I'm in one of those phases of life where everything around me goes to shit for awhile and I just have to bulldog through it.

R1 going on the stand later today, the parts are in my PO box (along with my BrotoGP shirt to rock in Austin for MotoGP next week) so I'm finally mobile again and off to town to pick everything up, then bike on the stand, drain oil, drop the pan, swap the pumps, refill the oil and restart it. The fun part about restarting it is that I get to run it off the downtubes only since I dont want the staining of the drip on the collector pipe. The R1 is really a ground shaker without the collector/tail pipe attached.

Once the R1 is done this afternoon the GT is going back up for some swingarm pivot grinding, and to fit the Accent electronic ignition and dump those points.

Anybody need GT parts? cheap

Decided I'm going to be modifying the Jemcos to take a TZ style silencer like this:

I just bought the big 9" suzuki GS1100E "train" headlight and bucket off of fleabay for it, a $99 score. They usually go for upwards of $200 (insane).

found an alternate source for Sumitomo sealed connectors, better pricing than Eastern Beaver overall. Looks like a better selection as well

http://www.corsa-technic.com/category.php?category_id=107

They are stateside, out of WI. Shipping via USPS is under $5 for a few connectors that I've thrown in their cart to see what the shipping costs look like

and such a gentle, caring nudge.... Not a damn thing unfort. Just back from an extended stay in Asia since before Halloween, came home on 1/1, just getting my feet back under me (jet lag flying east is a bitch). Currently the GSXR race bike is up on the workbench being prepped for the upcoming season at the moment while working on a master bed/bath remodel.

Hands=full.

The 4/1 update above is still in line with the current direction. Only thing missing from the update is the fork extenders, the 92 GSXR 750 USD forks are way too short still vs stock. I can prob add that to the current to-do list though and get them in hand. I've got the TFoales suspension software, I need to measure it all out and see what all the angles look like so I know how long to make the extenders. Prob is that I can't put the original triple back on, rollers were shot and falling out, so I can't measure the original front ATM. need to figure out something to solve that that doesn't cost $. Should have done that the moment i rolled it into the garage.
