Nation-wide climate strike by students

I'd maybe go a bit further and say many people think we, as Americans, are ENTITLED to eat meat once or more meals a day.

I eat meal maybe 2 meals a week at this point, and typically chicken. Not holier-than-thou in any way, but having a vegan wife has been a positive influence...:laughing

I eat meat all the time, but I rarely eat red meat, because it's probably not the best thing for a middle aged guy to eat with any regularity. I'm not close to being over weight or out of shape, but feel that as you age, cleaning up your diet is essential to keep the negative effects of aging at bay.

I would say the general public would do better to eliminate processed foods and refined sugars as opposed to regular consumption of clean meat products.

Great points! :thumbup

I was a red meat guy for decades, now it's a bi-weekly occurrence.

I have gone to almost all of my food is now made from scratch. It takes more shopping, more time spent cooking and keeping much more vegetables but the results taste better (though my teenage son would contest that) and is definitely healthier.

Yeah, I switched almost completely to, "Clean Food," as I call it, in my 30's. Food that isn't processed, with a few exceptions. Mainly gave up on fast food. I still buy prefab Bread and Pasta. I do not have the patience to make my own, even though I like to cook.

I still eat pig probably every day though and I don't see that ever changing for me.

Not only trying to eat clean but I've also started trying to eat low from the glycemic index with carbs. No wheat, less bread, less juice.

That is a newer experiment for me, but I have been playing with it more too. I really like fruit though, so I don't intend to give it up.

Fruit is an odd one in that its effect changes depending on degree of ripeness.

I could never give up eating mangos.

Health-wise, perhaps. But, for environmental harm, I think meat is a main issue? It's so water intensive, the methane or whatever from the cows, all the transport required for meat, etc. etc. etc. etc.

Then, there is the treatment of factory farm animals (not environmental, unless you consider animals a part of nature).

Fruit juice is candy. I love it but don't even drink OJ anymore. I do however eat tons of fruit. It's just too easy to drink sugar weather it be in soft drink form or fruit juice form. I did splurge on a cheat day and have a glass of Martinellie's sparkling apple cider. It's Liquid candy and its divine.

I used to think I was doing good by only drinking 100% juice, not the from concentrate stuff. Figured lots of victim C was a good thing so drank at least a liter of OJ per day.
How disappointed to lean its impact is pretty much the same as had it been sugar.

I'm currently working on evolving a bread recipe that is healthy and tastes good. I don't want to go all whole wheat flour, I want a mix, kind of like Mike's Killer Bread. I'm adding flax seeds, experimenting with seeds and ground seeds. I like rolled oats. Going to experiment with different nuts.

Anybody have some favorite grains they have had good luck with?

I've gone to lemon just with only squeezed lemons in it, no sugar. It really grows on you after awhile. Sometimes I'll add sun tea (no sugar) to it.

Only suggestion I’d have is crack or grind the flax seeds so you can access it’s protein. We can’t really digest them if the hulls are intact.

Well, it is a lot better for you if you eat all the other garbage form the fruit and not just suck the blood out. Most of it is full of nutrients and digestion aids.

I could not give up apples. 'MERICA!

Don't forget the fibers.

Last week Honey Crisp apples were on sale, nice break from the Fuji apples I usually get.

I'm a fan of Pink Ladies

+1 on Pink Ladies.

Try Opals if you can find them. They were on sale at Nob Hill For $0.97/lb a few weeks ago and they are amazing.

tried a new one called "cosmic crisp" last week too. It was really good.

Nor should you. My Apple growing family in PA needs everyone to realize the glory that is an American grown Apple.
