I like this guy, because he likes railroads, like I do:

tl/dr: I guess the pertinent BARF question is how far Santa Rosa is from Gilroy. :laughing

anyway. if I’m lucky I’ll maybe still be around in 2040. :toothless

Aren't we talking about the federal government calling back their investment from California's rail project at a time when they are pushing other even more questionable and absurd pointless federal spending?

I'm pretty careful about choosing what to write without making an overt political statement.

Sorry if you didn't like the last one, I'll do better

Thanks John. I'm sticking with 'it aint gonna happen', ever.
In fact, I don't think it will EVER get past phase one.

well, we’ll see. we certainly won’t get it done if we worry how much it’s gonna cost. :laughing

anyway. I like the “head west” at Madera plan. sorry Merced. :toothless

I've never heard anyone apologize to Merced.

It's usually Merced doing the apologizing

I think that the money would be better spent by fully repaving all of my favorite roads.
It would cost about 230 billion dollars less too!

HSR will happen, but not till 2050 or later and not for the reasons currently given. It will happen because an electric train will end up being cheaper than a jet fueled airplane to operate by then. HSR in Kali faces the BART problem of being the first to try it and every attempt after this will look at what most of the rest of the world uses and standardize on that, much like most light rail in this country is not using BART specifications.

There is nothing worth visiting in Bakersfield, it's the shithole of the valley. There is a particular stench that is around Bakersfield from the cows that can make your eyes water.
Merced isn't much better, no real reason to visit them either.

I can’t believe that people put up with 3+ hour commutes one way. That is completely insane!

I live in the Willow Glen area of San Jose and I thought my 45 minute commute to Mt. View was excessive.

Bay area pay, cheap Sac Valley prices is why. This isn’t the result of COVID either, it’s been happening since I moved to California in 2001.

1/2 the construction industry does it. I assume that is why a lot of contractors start at 5:00 am and are done at 2. Commute hell.

seems like they're repaving my favorite roads all the time?

Didn't they just finish repaving (and realigning) Hwy 36 for you? :dunno

edit:
"Caltrans has allocated over $100 million for various safety, emergency repair, and rehabilitation projects on Highway 36 (Hwy 36) between 2024 and early 2026, driven by SB 1 funding and federal investments. Major projects are focused in Humboldt, Tehama, and Plumas counties to address collision rates, storm damage, and infrastructure upgrades."

tough crowd, our anti-pothole BARFers ... :laughing :Bap

They have definitely repaved and realigned most of it in the last 10 years. Unfortunately, there's quite a few miles of tar snakes that need to be ground down and repaved with 4 inches of pristine asphalt for my pleasure, still waiting to happen.

I"ve seen too many roads where they did the repaving on the cheap and didn't properly seal it. Within a years particles are sloughing off and within 2 years the road has already degraded from times of rain when the water creates hydraulic effects when cars run over it. Really stupid choices, but too many places are opting for it.

They've shifted the train use in the last week or so. The plan they missed the deadline on has cows being trained to Modesto for remote milking and then trained back to Bakersfield.

Says the guy on dirt bike, long travel suspension!

Are you serious or is this just jest?

Can you imagine if they had tried to sell the HSR on that plan? :laughing

Sounds like a three+ hour commute just one way. Over 6 hours a day commuting. It will never sell.
The guy who named the Zima product is an old friend of mine, worked in Marketing and Branding. Made a few shitty Hallmark movies.

He always said that you couldn't really work in the business unless you were in L.A., but his house was in Mill Valley, his Marketing company job was in San Rafael. So he had a P.O. Box in L.A. and an L.A. office number forwarding to to his cell phone. If he ever got a call from somebody that wanted to, "do lunch," he would tell them he already had a meeting today, and let's do lunch tomorrow at Hip Movie People Lunch spot of the month. He would drive down that night, do the meeting, and drive back the next day. Perfect for guys like that.

As it is right now, I have known quite a few People who commute to the Bay Area from Roseville and shit. Similar run, for some people it is worth it. I dig it for the Disneyland day trip potential, depending on how close it gets you to Anaheim, it may make the Annual Passes more appealing again.

Of course most of this is supposing you can get a train ticket for like $50, it needs to be significantly cheaper than the typical $150 round trip to LAX or SAN.
