I’m so sorry to read about your loss and violation. And sickened by the police inaction. Good for you and your family to share your story with media. A broken system, like a lot of others. Water circling the drain.

wrt oakland PD - they are likely inundated with reports, but priority-wise, you would think that they would recognize potential opportunities to take down what clearly looks like a crime ring. you know - higher bang for the buck type focusing of resources. and their resources are likely limited in comparison to the volume they dealing with. which supports my prior argument. not smart (to put it mildly).

Two things to consider here. One is the incentive of the starting wage, pose that alongside 130_something. The other is the take home pay in the HCOL BA. Teachers get this treatment all the time. "85K average for 180 days!" Subtract taxes and contributions and a little union dues on the side and my $100K salary pencils out to $5.5K monthly. Is that too much? Trainees, or interns as we call them at $7K would take home a bit less.

Show me the incentive and I'll show you the outcome, someone said.
 
I think the pay is really not the issue. It is the people in charge of the system that are.
I am sure the officers would love to crack some thieves heads and shut the shit show down but if their bosses are we can't and the politicians say don't they are pretty helpless overall.
 
East Menlo's & East Palo Alto's socioeconomic profile sure changed the last 10 years. All it took was Facebook and other tech companies to locate there and the well paid staffs taking over housing, and better merchant retailers moving in. The crime stat drops are pleasantly stunning.

(Notwithstanding a guy with a CVS who moved there and promptly got his car stolen- not helping the stats bro)

On an interesting side note. A friend of mine had one of his employees trucks stolen last night. Knowing what I went through he said that the employees should go to Oakland and look through the hood where my car was.

They did and they found it and got it back. Gotta go gansta on this stuff I guess.

Really sad to say that, but is what it is at this point. Can't count on the police to do anything except collect $$$. That is an exaggeration but sure is starting to feel that way. Overworked, understaffed, underpaid.. what else can you throw at the wall?

Menlo Park PD still has not come to pick up the video evidence. 8 days.

It really is VERY unfortunate when citizens have to go and claim their own property. This is how people get into armed confrontations, not a good result for anyone.

I guess this will A) drive up the cost of ownership for stopping theft B) tracking theft & C) property recovery services....

I hope @budman 's insurance can make him whole enough to go find another car like that but still this is painful in every way to read and see happen.

Do you do it?

and park it on the same street where the last one got 1) backed into by knucklehead neighbor and 2) targeted and stolen

Don't forget pensions, plenty get a 6 figure pension after 30 years.

I'm not sure why you are getting all defensive or what you are asking. Many cops make more in ot than their base salary. Some sf cops make over 500 k a year but working ot.

It has nothing to do with a pension, that is a different thing. But to compare them to teachers salary wise is laughable.

How did the people in charge of the system prohibit the Oakland PD to go check out a vehicle?!?

I don't think the people in charge of any city / system are literally prohibiting that the Police Dept literally go and check out a vehicle / etc/ crime ring as littlebeast point out.

That said... I think any police station gets calls "come here, I see a stolen vehicle", all the time, so... maybe they'll secretly admit "we don't believe those calls". I guess that'd be wrong in many cases.
