How did the people in charge of the system prohibit the Oakland PD to go check out a vehicle?!?

I don't think the people in charge of any city / system are literally prohibiting that the Police Dept literally go and check out a vehicle / etc/ crime ring as littlebeast point out.

That said... I think any police station gets calls "come here, I see a stolen vehicle", all the time, so... maybe they'll secretly admit "we don't believe those calls". I guess that'd be wrong in many cases.

I would speculate that those calls may get treated as an "abandon vehicle" call, turned over to the Community Service Officer or Parking Enforcement and not acted on for 72 hours.
Guess this would also depend on the city and it's street parking regulations for any given street. For most residential streets vehicles parked on a street longer than 72 hours are subject to removal per California Vehicle Code 22651(k) and a city's municipal code if the PD is called. Not sure what the time frame is once the vehicle is "tagged" and then checked again, then how long before it's removed?

I think the pay is really not the issue. It is the people in charge of the system that are.
I am sure the officers would love to crack some thieves heads and shut the shit show down but if their bosses are we can't and the politicians say don't they are pretty helpless overall.

Two decades ago, I rode with a buddy whose mom was the police chief for Oakland. He was an ex Ranger, shot in Bosnia a few times, and Iraq vet. Cool AF guy. He said the city council was the problem, even back then...and she was impacted from having the effect she wanted on crime.

Teacher and PD starting salaries are the same in my city. Then the steps are similar. PD can tap out earlier, and need to. They are all wrecked from lugging the belt in and out of the car, unless they promote up to take it off. The OT is due to crazy understaffing because most of the candidates wash out and so few really talented people work for so little with such shit hours and demands. 40% of SDPD is former military and they are kinds pre-trained. Check out the transparent California education salaries, they are eye-popping.
