Yay datacenters...driving up electricity costs

If you're going to talk about the good, you also have to acknowledge the bad. Contrary to what the worlds richest man claims, if AI does all of the work for society, everybody isn't going to be living a full, rich life. Not even close.

AI may first replace the hordes of useless corporate softies that accomplish nothing except output spreadsheets, slide decks, etc (and yet by some historical accident are currently the highest paid jobs.) This might not be a bad thing.. if AI can do it, basic office work will become very low value, and it will force humans to actually use their hands to fix things, and make things. The amount of white collar workers out there who can't even turn a screwdriver, is appalling. We need to return to rewarding people for increasing humanity's overall material and cultural wealth.

and here I am hanging up my tools to do desk work :oops:

Man these mormon datacenters sure piss me off. Otherwise, we definitely wouldn't have rich corps screwing over people and corrupting all layers of state/fed workers if it weren't for them. We definitely didn't have the exact same wealth/authority/corruption issues from white men prior to 1830.

I just rolled my eyes so hard I saw my breakfast a second time.

Yeah I swung and missed..

Fucking black females and their god damned datacenterz!

I just can't understand anything unless it fits the stuff I dislike!

Did I mention that it's nice not being a cuck for billionaires? :)

The 26 plaintiffs seek a court order blocking layoffs set to start on July 22
Meta said the claims lack merit and people made workforce decisions, not AI
Lawsuit says Meta used productivity scores and AI token usage in layoff selections
July 14 (Reuters) - Twenty-six employees of Meta ‌Platforms (META.O), opens new tab have filed a novel lawsuit accusing the tech giant of using AI-powered software that disproportionately targeted people with disabilities or who took medical leave in selecting workers for mass layoffs.

The lawsuit, filed in Oakland, California, federal court late Monday, says that the company relied on factors such as productivity and AI token usage when it slashed thousands of jobs earlier this year, disadvantaging people who missed work because of medical conditions or to care for family members.

Seems legit...

And also...

Datacenters really seem to bring out the best in people...

The core problem in this country is that there is rarely ever any consequences for corruption.

And it's not just their corruption, it's ours. We invest in these corps and since they make us money, we turn the cheek to all of it.

Was listening to cnbc on the commute yesterday. Some AI snake oil salesman was being interviewed and plugging the benefits of data centres claiming they use very little water, generate their own electricity enough so they put the access back into the grid lowering rates for residents, create lots of longterm local employment, are heavily tax putting money back into the community to the benefit of all… Dude sounded as credible and shady as he who shall not be named.

International corporations stand in the way of such a change. Said, "White Collar Workers," are necessary to maintain the wealth consolidation model they represent.

Eliminating those jobs with software does not create more local "hands on" jobs, it just enhances wealth consolidation for the people in Corp Leadership and ownership who remain, while thinning the job pool of labor who could have paid people for their hands on labor.

Just wait for the next coming robotic labor wave of job elimination in the next 20 years or so.

AI and robotics are going to eliminate so much labor, I simply do not see any path forward without large and gruesomely violent social reordering.

The unwashed masses will eventually break from the lack of opportunity and tear things apart at scale.

Robots are shockingly horrible at anything involving dexterity of hands. Wake me when people start buying bed-making and laundry-folding robots. Either way, it will be a joy watching the demise of the hairgel segment of generation x, those low and mid-level white collar workers that are a disproportionately poor value, a real vacuum sucking black hole of resources. Those grossly paid ceo's are a much better value, which is really saying something..

This could be a Bernie and AOC Bill. I am on the phone so I’m not sure…

Well it is a Bernie bill for sure...

A BILL

To impose a moratorium on the construction of new data centers until legislation is enacted that safeguards the public from the dangers of artificial intelligence.

1.
Short title

This Act may be cited as the Artificial Intelligence Data Center Moratorium Act.

2.
Findings

Congress finds that—

(1)
leading experts and industry leaders have warned about catastrophic consequences from unchecked artificial intelligence development and deployment, including—

(A)
Elon Musk, the wealthiest person alive, and worth $826,600,000,000 as of the date of introduction of this Act, who stated that AI and robots will replace all jobs. Working will be optional. and that artificial intelligence is akin to summoning the demon;

(B)
Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, who predicted that AI could displace half of all entry-level white collar jobs in the next 1 to 5 years. and that humanity is about to be handed almost unimaginable power, and it is deeply unclear whether our social, political, and technological systems possess the maturity to wield it.;

Bill Gates, worth $101,000,000,000 as of the date of introduction of this Act, who predicted that humans won’t be needed for most things, such as manufacturing products, delivering packages, or growing food over the next decade due to artificial intelligence;

(F)
Mustafa Suleyman, the CEO of Microsoft AI, who said that most white-collar work will be fully automated by an AI within the next 12 to 18 months;
