2026/2027 NFL Thread

That's the story with every team. It's a battle of attrition.

One game doesn't mean much, especially Game 1 in frickin Australia, but it's nice to smack the "super team" In the mouth right out the gate.

Shannahan's offense is not friendly to the health of RBs and TEs due to the outside zone blocking schemes.

One game means a lot in the NFL. There are only 17 games overall and six of those are conference games. It’s not like MLB, NHL, or NBA where the number of games is insane. Seattle won but I think SF is the better team of those two, and AZ should be two wins for the 9ers.

But that has been their story for a few years running now. Talent and Coaching didn't seem to be the problem.
In track, we know that athletes are most likely to get injured when they get to a state of over-training, when their recovery can't keep up with the damage they do to their cells from games and practice. There are 2 causes of this: 1. Insufficient pre-season preparation to strengthen the tissues and joints to a level that can withstand higher intensity (speed) forces as they get into a season, 2. Insufficient recovery, both daily and programming in a recovery week every 4-6 weeks during season.

Tissues break down when practicing or competing, without a recovery week you go backwards throughout the season until micro tears and micro fractures become macro tears and macro fractions, then one day you're jogging off the field and a knee gives out or something else.

The Niners have a long history of not properly ensuring recovery, that is overwhelmingly clear by their record of injuries over many years.

Another factor, and maybe more causal, is PEDs. Specifically, those that promote muscle hypertrophy while thinning the very connective tissue holding these bundles of strength onto bone.

Think of it as installing a high-performance engine without strengthening frame or transmission. Something's got to give. And it does.

Niners replaced the strength & conditioning coaches due to injuries a few years ago and revamp their approach. It doesn't seem to have made much of a difference. I doubt there is some kind of S & C trick or method that they are missing because that would quickly spread to all teams.

It has to be a combo of player age, randomness (i.e. bad luck) or something Shanahan is doing or not doing since it has gone on for so long. I don't know what "outside zone blocking schemes" means but it would be interesting to see if other teams that use that method have higher injury rates. Also, Shanahan isn't much into "load management" since he will run CMC or Kittle into the ground in the heat of battle on game day if needed. Of course they want the rock so they are happy to go along with that but part of the coach's job is to protect players from themselves.

You can have strength and conditioning coaches, but if the practice schedule doesn't facilitate recovery, then you'll continue to have the same time.

I don't think that Shanahan factors in recovery into his practice schedule, he is the common factor and the buck stops with him.

As I said, part of the problem is Shanahan doing or not doing something that is causing the problem. If the S & C coaches review the practice schedule and advise and Shanahan ignores the advice then it all on him. If what you say is true, then S & C coaches should find another team or resign.

That is simply not true. Cleveland will lose to every one else in they playoffs if they are all starting healthy in December and most of the other teams have half their starting guys on RR. Some teams simply do not have a shot in a given season. Their roster+coaching is just too abysmal to create a culture that will allow them to win. Football is not merely a game of plug in player parts and statistics, you need a certain kind of psychology and chemistry in a locker room to make a Champion. Miami and Arizona are in a similar boat.

Now, how about them Giants? :teeth

Dart is most assuredly charging full steam ahead into the IR list this season, he seems determined to end his career with the concussion protocol before his Rookie deal is over, but that boy is fun to watch, Pal. Beat up Dallas pretty good today, with a chance to knock the Rams down another peg on Monday night next week.
I figure anyone with a shot to beat Dallas and L.A. in a two week stretch is a friend of the 49ers for two weeks at least. :D

The Rams will be pissed off on Monday and playing at home. If they take that and thump the Giants, maybe the hype was real. Myles Garrett is a bust now on injured reserve, and they are counting on the Ghost of Aaron Donald to come haunt the field for the first time in like 3 years to save their Defense.

Dart and Nabers are finding their stride, Cam Skattebo is still an unhinged character, the Giants defense hasn't found their stride yet, but seems very high function with a lot of young talent Harbough is still figuring out. We shall see.

Yeah, my Guys have an ever worse history of that.

Did anyone see that show the Bears put on?

I love their long overdue return to relevance.

Well they can count me on their friend list for Monday night foozball against the Rams.

I watched Caleb at USC for a couple years, he carried the team by himself sometimes, winning with just his unwillingness to lose, sometimes.

He's going to be a great quarterback in the NFL.

Maybe Williams, Dart and Darnold will buck the poor showing of USC QBs in the NFL track record. The dis on Caleb last year was seeming to wait to win the game with 4th quarter heroics. NFL =/= college ball. Dart with NYGs looked good yesterday. Darnold won the SB but is still sus to me. His kryptonite is pressure and he starts seeing ghosts. 2025 Niners had zero pass rush so Darnold looked good and the Niners got smoked twice by Seattle. 2026 is a prove it year for Darnold in my view to see if he has really conquered his ghosts.

Dart is fun to watch.

Shanahan had his contract extended. Closing in on all time 9er records.... except.....

Superbowl wins.

Really wish NFL fans had cleaver chants like the English do for their teams.
