Who here has made the "jump" to all bike-no car?

I did bike only for about three months this summer. It was awesome, but a 30mph low side busted my shoulder up enough and caused enough damage to the VFR that I had to pick up a cheap Datsun to get by until I got it all repaired. Now I roll the car when it's too cold out. Black ice in a car is bad, I don't want to find out how it is on a bike.

I have used my FZ1 only now for 13 months. The only thing that sucks after a while is putting on gear. I know it sounds lame, but I miss being able to jump right in the car and going.......now lane splitting when there is an accident on the other hand:thumbup

I did it when I was younger but I find no glory in being uncomfortable for no reason. I can ride in the rain until the cows come home but a wet ride down 5 to LA is better in the car. I went up to the snow last weekend. I was warm, toast and dry and only had to hit the FWD button to avoid chaining up. The bike wasn't even an option up in the ice. Our California winters aren't much and one can ride for unscathed through most of it but a cage is sweet at the extremes....

I need both...every week:(

I think its the reptilian-brain trying to make amends with the chimp portions of myself, minus the poop throwing.
Funny shit! (pun intended, of course)

I had a pick-up that I used for dates in the rain and going surfing. Other than that, it was my beloved GS1000 that I lived on - no matter what!

I don't remember if I threw excrement or not. Probably. :ride

what's with all the hate re: those of us who bike and drive as well?

I think it depends on your current lifestyle. I didn't start riding til 4 years ago, & currently have a wife and a kid - try going to the store to buy baby food, diapers, other necessities with just a bike. And forget the backpack, saddlebag, etc. solution, I'm the only package my bike carries.

I can see myself using a bike as a sole means of transport 10 years ago in my college days, when I only had to worry about myself, but things change. I ride for fun, not out of necessity

You *need* a couch and loveseat....you can't expect the poor doggies to sleep on the floor. :laughing

That's what the bed is for! :)

if I had a doggie, which I don't anymore. :(

Live and let live...

I have a family and enjoy activities outside of motorcycling that require having a car/suv (i.e. cycling, snowboarding, family trips, etc). Also, riding in rain/cold/fog... while "romantic" to some... sucks for me.

Yet, if I were still single (and a non-parent), I'd have a motorcycle and a Toyota 4X4 pick-up... :thumbup

I went all bike for nearly 2 years. I loved it. I've been very spoiled with my car now, and am thinking very hard about selling the car and going back to all bike. I loved having only my bike.

I'll never make that jump..what am I supposed to haul the bike to the track with? And taking a bike to the snow is not ideal :laughing

I guess I have since my hubby only drives the car. I do all the grocery shopping and other errands on my bike (rain or shine). With all the baggage on the FJR I can fit quite a lot in there (except my guitar :( )

I've been bike-only since I gave my old Golf away 2 years ago. I've gotten way better at traction management, the fine art of strapping weird, heavy, and/or strangely-shaped objects to the bike (although I am upgrading from Ventura soft bags to hard luggage for the 919 this year), and have gotten good raingear, a Respro Foggy mask for defogging my faceshield, and I always carry rubber dishgloves for overgloves, a balaclava, and an Aerostich visor wiper in the winter.

Burning1's point about never being able to drink much in public again is sound, however. But I can take BART or walk to the bar when need be, or talk my gf into going in her truck, which she's also kind enough to loan for trackdays.
