I found a semi-decent deal on a 0 mile 2009, 1198; I already own a liter bike but I'm trying to justify buying another one. Can you guys help me build up a list of pros & cons?

Here are mine so far-

Pros:

*Sexy looking
*Sounds amazing
*$15K otd (not the deal of the century for an 09' but not bad for 0 miles)
*Low end torque that'd put my R1 to shame
*Never owned a V-twin
*Since I stack up around 15-20K miles/year, I can reduce miles on my beloved R1

Cons:

*Ducati's reputation for poor reliability
*Cost of ownership- expensive regular maintenance costs
*Already own a respectably fast & sexy liter bike (i.e. $15K I don't need to spend)
*Increased insurance costs
*The most uncomfortable motorcycle I have ever ridden (literally feels like a 300 pound dude has his foot on your nuts during the entire ride)
*Poor fuel tank range/mpg (based on reviews)

6 pros & 6 cons... I'm right down the middle- I need your help in making a decision on this!

based on this: *The most uncomfortable motorcycle I have ever ridden (literally feels like a 300 pound dude has his foot on your nuts during the entire ride)

my answer is no

Seems like a bike like that has nothing to do with lists or even rational thought. Either you want it or you don't and you will find just many people saying 'get it' and saying 'run away'

What's the point in asking really?

Edit - my opinion - I would never own any Euro bike as they're far more $$ to buy and own and I can't trust them not to break down in the middle of no where...having said that, I'd dig an 848EVO for sure.

I was exaggerating a wee bit there, but my R1 which is often regarded as a 'track-ready-from-the crate' type of a sportbike feels considerably more comfortable around the city. It could just be a matter of getting used to on my end; I only test rode the Ducati for a mile or so.

$15K will buy you a great touring bike, or a good touring bike and a dual sport. Or an okay touring bike, a dual sport, and a decent track bike. Or a good track bike and a fuckload of track-days.

I have no need for one sportbike to ride on the street, never-mind two.

Are you saying that if I have to ask it's probably not for me?

Maybe you're right, but every time I see pictures like the ones below, it makes me think that, as a die-hard motorcyclist, it'd be considered an injustice if I didn't take the deal:

By the time you're don modding it (and buying the ducati-branded gear), it'll be in the $25-30k range :laughing

Termi's are obligatory, aren't they? :p

ah... so this is what my econ professor meant by 'opportunity cost' years ago!:twofinger

They're ugly and they sound like shit.
And they're really expensive to insure.
:twofinger
One of those things is true.

I was hoping that an actual 1198 owner could confirm or deny the reliability / maintenance costs of this specific model, but based on Ducati's reputation, I can see where you're coming from.

Rossi moved from Yamaha to Ducati, should be good enuff :x

you know what... I'm the type of guy who doesn't modify vehicles at all. Stock is sexy to me. I'm not big on the 'pimp yo ride' type shit.

...But yea...termignonis are a given. :twofinger

yea apparently an additional 80 bucks / month on full coverage. ouch...

The real question is, are you married? If you are and want to stay that way, don't buy the bike. So many hot wimmenz, or menz if that's your thing, will swarm to you like flies to hot shit that it'll be impossible to keep a stable relationship.

If you're single, there's no question.

dude, don't listen to this crap. Haters gonna hate :twofinger Go for it, it's an awesome machine with enormous low RPM torque you gonna LOVE =)

My 848 isn't expensive to insure and I don't find it uncomfortable to ride either. However, it doesn't matter how pretty a bike is; if you are not comfortable on it, you will grow to hate it. I'd take a long test ride on it before deciding.

Wait for the new 2012 Superbike to come out. Word on the street is that it's the sexiest thing on two wheels.

Don't tell me you're one of those people who buy motorcycles based on their poonani-attracting ability... Getting the ladies (no thanks on the men) to ask "can you take me for a ride? :boobies" is a favorable by-product, but not my primary reason to ride, nor does it affect my motorcycle purchasing decisions. It does affect all my other purchasing decisions though. :teeth
