Cosplay is actually a Japanese term, the contraction of Costume and play.
Initially it starts as young Japanese women making costumes of their favorite anime characters, but as with all things the world follows where Japanese high school girls lead, and it spread internationally. most cosplayers are still young women, there are even a few that are practically professional either as cosplayers and/or costume makers. Cosplayers value home made costumes over store bought and appreciate attention to detail in costumes. There is also crossplay, dressing as the opposite gender, and crossovers, combining a character from one anime with the out fit from another anime.
there is a yearly competition called the World Cosplay Summit

Cosplayers will meet up with other cosplayers at conventions and have meet ups of characters from the same anime.
