Bought a 2016 Ninja 300 a few months ago and don't want it anymore

This probably happens often...

I bought a Ninja 300 to learn on a few months ago. I never signed the title or took it to the DMV, and I don't want the bike anymore. I live in Oakland.

Should I just sell the bike as if I never owned it? Or take it to the DMV, transfer to my name, then sell it? The DMV lines are brutal here so I really don't want to do that. I'm not sure if there are legal repercussions for selling the bike now. After googling, it looks like I'm not 'supposed' to, but I can't find any definitive penalties for doing it.

Sorry the riding bug didn't bite you the right way.

Just curious, did you buy it new or used?

Confused.
Are you done with the motorcycle or done with riding all together?

You will probably have an easier time selling it with the title in your name. I generally am not going to risk any trouble at the DMV or any paperwork irregularities for a bike being sold at or about the going rate. If it was a steal, I might take a chance, but life it too short for potential complications with no upside.
Make an appointment at DMV and it will take you less than 30 minutes. Or try and sell the bike and see what happens. You might get lucky and someone won't care.

*ALSO, the seller might have already given DMV your information through a release of liability and that may complicate things for the new buyer/and or you if they have a problem getting it registered.

Used. Bike is 2016 with ABS, looks great, but has a salvage title.

Done with the bike. Will probably buy a different bike later on. I'm moving right now and need the parking for my car.

If you have the title signed over from a previous owner, and there's a date on it, there are fees for going that long without transferring the title.

Use this form to tell you how much it will cost for you - or someone else - to transfer the title.
https://www.dmv.ca.gov/FeeCalculatorWeb/usedVehicleForm.do

Also, make an appointment or join AAA. Skip the lines.

Tried to, but it says "Unable to determine registration fees due. Salvage certificate was issued. Current application in process. "

Do you have a salvage title in hand, or a salvage certificate? If the latter, there's a process you need to go through - including a CHP inspection - to get an actual title.

You can sell a bike with a salvage certificate, but for a lot less, since it can't be registered as a streetbike on just the certificate.

But the certificate can become a title?

You have a lot of work ahead of you, and you probably paid way too much for the bike. You could just part it out. Sell the parts on eBay/Craig's or some such. While that's extra hassle it's likely to produce more money than you could good consciously get for the bike, and you want have to deal with the paper work. The only part where it would matter would be the frame.

Wait, do you still need the brake and light/salvage inspection done by the CHP?

Hope when you bought it you got a deal as I just purchased a 2017 300 ABS for my wife for $4000 at the dealer so hopefully you paid a lot less

ill give you $200

So if you go thru the trouble of getting a title, you'll have that time involved and expenses with registrations and fees, and then you'll need to wait a few weeks for the title to show up in the mail. Then things will be legit, but you will still be selling a salvaged bike (so still a lower price than a clean title).

Or you could just put it on CL at a great price and let the next person worry about it. I think I would go this route ... since the other route isn't going to get you a ton more money for it.

Make an appointment, then no need to wait in long lines...

Got DMV questions? Give them a phone call, talk to an agent. With the automated phone system they will call you back, so again no long waits. 1-800-777-0133 They can look up the VIN and tell you exactly what the status is so no guessing.
