2026 F1 thread, when season starts there will be spoilers.

The simple solution is a rolling start. Common with auto / kart racing.
 
The freedom to develop the straight line mode mechanisms is great. I’m surprised only Alpine went with bottom hinge.

I like that gloss paint is back. I also like the new reg requiring more paint - too much bare carbon gets old.
I am curious what 'AI' holds for the F1 broadcasting... like video overlays etc...

No. One of the reasons why I really like F1.

Imagine if NASCAR did standing starts. It would take FOREVER to get up to speed at Daytona. LOL

I imagine IndyCar can do standing starts if they wanted to.

I suspect motorsports has been using machine learning video tools for 4-5yrs. Any time we see a digital ad that’s stuck on track or fake track banner, I’d bet it’s ML. Or anything that follows a car.
 
FIA will be testing engine compression at 130deg C starting at the Dutch GP in August.

Also, they will be testing different starting procedures over the 3 last days of testing at Bahrain.

Finally, Apple TV now (as of last night) has the F1 hub added to it's app.
 
The 130C test is up for a vote with all the PU suppliers. They need 4 for it to pass. Most are saying the FIA wouldn’t have proposed the vote if it didn’t have the support to pass.

The implementation date might be kinda sticky for the PU limits. They only get 3 PUs. Starting the new test at Rround 13 suggests that Merc will need their 2nd engine to comply. If they wait for their 3rd engine, they’d need a 4th to make it to the end of the season.

Yea but within the last year it seems the ML models have finally started to put out the 'good stuff' [indistinguishable for mistakes by human eye] plus the 'live' overlay is the tricky bit for Broadcast (but the saving grace is live production less people will care for ML artifacts I guess....). Lets see how that lands I guess....
 
The NFL has had a pretty stable display of lines on the field for a number of years, now. They seemed to have solved all of the issues to make it seamless.

Lines on the field are a bit different then creating content using ML no?


 
The ML part occurs near the start of the process. You train a model on what a ball looks like under all conditions. That’s the ML. Then you use the model to detect the location of the ball with live video and do whatever you want with the location. It could work for any object or part of the track or whatever. From lots of location data, you can even get velocity and acceleration. But they already have car GPS, so ya.

AI content generators are diff. They are a model that has been trained on other content to create new content. I can’t think of anything that F1 would want to create with this. All the graphics are well defined - graphs of throttle or braking, driver names and time, etc. You don’t need AI to make that. Maybe you use ML to display it on screen, maybe not. Maybe the broadcast teams will use AI to replace their graphic designers and we’ll see more variety throughout the year.

They are, but they were working really good before AI even became a household name. With greater capabilities and processing, there is a lot more possible.

My aerospace engineering degree is struggling to find ways that rear wing can be faster. Any lift generated will produce induced drag. So zero lift and downforce is generally better for less drag.

But you can’t see aero. And there’s no fucking way that Ferrari would produce that mechanism and wing without running it through CFD. So there’s gotta be some airflow “trick” that is reducing drag more than any extra induced drag.

Or maybe fully upside-down is actually less downforce than right-side-up with the minimum angle of attack. And there is no lift. This is prob the simplest answer.
 
I would expect there to be significant forces on the rear wing and pivoting it to greater drag while at top speed would see the greatest forces resisting the movement.

Does anybody know if it's mechanical, hydraulic or magnetic?
 
I would agree that if this is acting like an airplane wing (when opened/flipped) then it would create some drag but it would also lift the rear slightly which might alter the aero of the car. Just a guess.

From what I have read, flipping the wing this way allows them to run more downforce (when wing is not flipped) in the corners. So, Ferrari might be able to run more rear wing (downforce) without it affecting straight line speed.
 
Very interesting approach, something you'd expect from the application of some of the best aerodynamicists on the planet.
 
I hope we get some insane Monza laps this year. The need for tiny wings should be reduced because they can “open” any wing as much as they want. So maybe they’ll be ridiculously fast through the corners there, while keeping the same straight line speed.

Spa could be nuts too.

Hopefully those systems are double redundant, I would not want to be going through Eau Rouge or the Parabolica with a malfunctioning / open flap and lacking the down force I thought I had...
