60's Honda CL 160 Rebuild as Racer

That's true, I could probably find something. The real problem is that if I slid a velocity stock onto my carb intake, it will leave a prominent lip inside, which will almost certainly be detrimental to air flow. If I make my own I can design in a step to nest onto the carb mouth to avoid the problem.

You can see the lip of the carb mouth inside the throat of the velocity stack in this photo. In person it looked even more dramatic.

A properly made stack will have a shoulder in it. Not only to keep the airflow smooth, but to provide a seating point for the stack against the carb.

It's pretty academic though, as I don't see anything on Ebay ATM, other than ones for old DelOrtos and Harleys. Yer just gonna haveta DIY it. :party

Got a few things in the mail yesterday. CB175 gauges, throttle cable, some Honda bits (bolts, circlips, etc.).

And a regulator/rectifier, courtesy of Craig Haggart. Thanks, Craig! :thumbup

Then I got to work on the perches. I first drilled out the mirror mount holes to clean out the cruddy threads. I made little aluminum inserts. The plan was to weld them in and grind them down. Unfortunately it seems that one or both alloys were not happy with being welded. Despite my making every effort to keep the welds clean you can see inclusions. Here, they are only roughed out - they still need to be sanded smooth. Win some, loose some. Next time I'll do it differently.

I'm nearly done with final engine reassembly. I noticed, when trying to mount the cylinders, that my roller pin was too wide so I had to grind it down. Fits now.

I also received a seat in the mail that one of the 160 guys was clearing out of his garage. He was practically giving it away...how could I say no? :teeth

This won't make it onto the race bike. Maybe for street duties. Either way, I'm probably going to cast a mold of both seats for future projects.

And lastly.

I'm still toying with battery mounting ideas. My current plan is to make a tray and secure it with a strap, like many modern bikes do. But I'll have to make my own. So I stripped this latch off a defunct toolbox, and I'll mount it to the battery tray. Then I'll make a leather strap for it. Should be straightforward. We'll see about that.

Drilled out the front brake bar, may remake it aluminum later on.

Then I wanted to make replicas of the original "zip ties." They aren't available anywhere. I sorted it all out; material, dimensions, processes, etc. Then I talked with Scott Dunleavy at Berkeley Honda Yamaha and he said that they never worked very well after they were removed and reattached a few times. In the scrap bin then.

I've been organizing my moto pics and I ran across these images of a CR/CB160 that was for sale on CL a few years ago...

Twitch, you should consider running a SpeedCell instead of regular battery....

While working on the shift drum my finger got caught between the clutch basket and the oil filter. Looks pretty deep. I'm on my way to the hospital now.

edit: I should mention that the second shot, the bloody close up, was taken about an hour after I got cut. I took that bandage off (you can see the medical tape there) to see if the cut had clotted and that was what I was met with. And when I decided it was time to take my girlfriend to the movies. We watched part of Troy and part of Geronimo. In the waiting room. Super romantic.

Emergency room was interesting. Got 7 stitches, it's a deep but clean cut. Pics tomorrow, I promise. :twofinger

But I feel lucky. A guy was admitted just after me who got his finger severed when it was slammed in a car door. :wtf Actually, not severed, but crushed off.

The guy who cleaned my wound, it turns out, is a former 1970's AFM racer who raced....CB160s! He also raced 305s and 350s. But his last race bike was a Honda CR93. One of only 200 produced - I think there is a pic of two of that model somewhere in this thread. Pretty cool. His name was Ron Shuman (sp?) in case anybody knows him.

As I was shooting and posting pics while running out the door for a cab all I could think of was that thread where a guy ran his hand between his chain and rear sprocket while cleaning his chain with the bike running. :laughing

I always wondered how he thought to take the time to photograph his mangled hand in the midst of it all. I guess, in a small way, I know now.

Heal up. Hopefully this won't interfere with school. The stitches, not the bike work :twofinger

Nice, eh? Do I have to add "warning, gross" to the thread title now? As if anyone is going to read through 18 pages of thread. :laughing

Five pages! :teeth

Owch - but glad it was clean enough to not lose the tip!

Exactly my thoughts!!
Sorry to not have pallets delivered.

Agree best thread going and now with added drama it may make "best of"

As an eye witness, I can testify that it was even more gruesome than the pictures show you. There was blood everywhere.... Nothing like a late night emergency room thriller for a date night. ;) :p

This thread just keeps getting better!

Question twitch, are you using 6061 for the AL bits you've machined?

Hi David & Donna, sorry to hear of your digital injury. A little Bonneville salt will make that scar a gleaming trophy for your grandchildren.

Bob does remember Ron, and says hello. Let me know when you go to pick up the 175 motor from Jim R.
