Unholy Blasphemies
Hahaha, opinions are like assholes and they all stink.
Ignore the haters. That's a bad ass car!
But definitely don't buy something like that unless you're prepared to wrench on it constantly

I think your confusing the Valiant with some sort of automobile.
You're buying a hobby. Anything you don't know about the car you will be forced to learn.
Just listening to you I know you've never owned anything that old-if you let it sit for a week between street sweepings, it won't start. Old cars don't sit well.
Heat won't go where you want it (if it ever heats up), power nothing, anemic engine, half the gears your used to, brakes that hate SF hills, everything inside will rattle, forever.
I'd do it.
You're not making a forever decision. If you want one, buy it. If you don't like it, sell it. There are always people looking for those cars.

I've owned or driven twenty or thirty or forty classics. I prefer my Ford Ranger, my Focus, fuck, any modern or semi modern car. The old cars had drum brakes that wear out quickly and are a PITA to work on, crappy suspension, bench seats, shitty seat belts, no air bags, and parts impossible to find. New cars rock.
I think about this every time I get the notion to buy another Datsun 510 or 240z (I loved those back in the day and even then those were older cars).

My buddy builds and races 510s. I think slam an engine out and back in, in q couple hours. Datsuns are very cool cars. A Z with a small block is awesome too.

LS motored Zs are pretty cool, here's one I saw a few years backMy buddy builds and races 510s. I think slam an engine out and back in, in q couple hours. Datsuns are very cool cars. A Z with a small block is awesome too.
Motor swaps in 510s are nothing but a couple of hour affair (I agree). My buddy's family ran ITC back in the day and between the race car and all of our various 510s (my group of friends had at least four at any given time and would hold impromptu rallies all the time) we got plenty of time working on them. While working on them is easy (have a 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 15mm and 17mm sockets/wrenches) they can't hold a candle to a modern, sealed cabin, AC that works and compliance/performance ride of today's cars.
My 72' 2 door had dual 44's, you couldn't hardly think when cruising on the freeway. The noise that car made was glorious at full sing, but as an everyday driver, I'm too old for that stuff.
I do miss that bucket of bolts. Last I heard, the knob I sold it to was seen revving the motor at a stop to 8,000rpm (floating the valves) in an effort to show off to some ladies. I'm pretty sure that despite the anvil like reliability of that built L20, that car has long since gone to scrap.

Last I heard, he was running 45 DCOE Webers, before that, twin 50mm Solex Mikunis, more or less the same. Pete Brock told him his BRE Replica was pretty close. One of my old coworkers, father, was a founder of Interpart, and his green 510 was on the back cover of one of those how to build a 510 manuals. Partners with Peter Brock. They're pretty serious about their toys, they spend a lot of time and money on them. About the same as a cocaine habit, from my estimation.
