A reminder to those commuting

You made the comparison to a Prius driver at 66 mph in the left lane. Have you thought about it from their point of view? They're already going above the speed that the law says they are allowed, yet they're supposed to somehow get out of your way or speed up? Sure, most people want to go faster, but there is no way you can justify getting agro with someone going the speed limit.

personally, i've come up behind many splitters and cars going slower than I would like to go, but somehow I've managed not to get all whiny, and usually I *get this* manage to get AROUND them WITHOUT pissing anyone off, and continuing my ride. It's really quite doable with enough skill and the right attitude. No need get all American Gladiator out there...not that anyone does, I get it's mostly internet bravado.

First, read back and notice I said I don't get bent out of shape over this. I'm just saying people should yield to faster traffic. My guess is that when they don't it is because they are either unaware or they have an attitude about it.

Getting out of the way is safer for everyone, and only a minor inconvenience for yourself.
...Sure, in general, slower traffic should move right.

they don't, americans drive like shit and everyone goes the speed they want and expects everyone to gtf out of their way.

I'm getting the sense we might actually be in agreement. :laughing

a bike doesnt need to change lanes to allow the other to SAFELY pass, yes i could have jumped lanes (and increase the danger factor to myself and others) or by the other rider being just as curtious to me as I am to him (by not buzzing him and waiting for a safe controlled oppurtunity) allow me to pass

going 66 in the fast lane holding up traffic, even if going above the speed limit (speed of traffic) is against the law. The left lane is to be used for passing only. If you're cruising 66 while there is a line of cars behind you, with no one in front of you... along with the random person flying by you to the right... do us all a favor and GET OFF THE SIDEWALK!

If we don't act out against driving behaviors like this, they're going to think it's OK to do so. Kind of like, people at a stop sign that try to make a left across your "right of way" before you.

:ride hard :ride safe

my thought......

If you come up behind another slower lanesplitting rider and the rider lets you pass him/her......pass them but then don't slow up once you pass.

Too many people come up on my ass because I am not going fast enough for them...I let them pass...and then they end up going slower than I orginally was and now I am riding their ass and they won't let me pass.

Kind of OT, but this morning while lane-sharing on the BB, I nearly got squished between two Prii. One of them was clearly moving to cut me off, and I could swear that the other Prius, either through some sort of electromagnetic reaction or in fulfillment of the Motorcycle Death Pact that they all sign upon delivery, starting drifting into my path too. Bastards!

There were additional Priuseses in front of and behind the two offending Priuseseses, too. So I powered through there real quick, lest I choke on a noxious cloud of smug (fortunately, it was a windy morning). :|

Goddam Prius :mad I swear they must be the most dangerous cars on the road. Someone should start a thread about it.

Just out of courtesy, I won't split past another rider. I'll just move over into lane 2 and split between 2 and 3.

Out of courtesy, I'd wait until I see that the rider in front of me acknowledged me (usually by hand gesture or the bike moving to the left on lane 1 and right on lane 2) then proceed to split with a thank-you wave.

I know there are riders out there who wouldn't let us through (in cars or on bikes). Assholes, I meant arrogant people, come in all shapes and vehicles.

I don't feel comfortable splitting between lanes 2 and 3. I try not to do it (guilty, I've done it in the past). It's hard enough to get cagers used to us splitting between 1 and 2, some are used to it based on what I see on my commute. Now they have to worry about splitters between lane 2 and 3 as well.

And imagine if 2 bikes come through splitting between 1-2 and 2-3. There's even less space to share.

I was talking about splitting and prius's, meaning the prius is in the commuter lane while the other lanes are substantially slower. Sure, in general, slower traffic should move right.

they don't, americans drive like shit and everyone goes the speed they want and expects everyone to gtf out of their way.

Also, if someone is holding up traffic behind them, they should pull over as well. Even if they're doing the limit or more.

hitman, is this on 101S from around Marsh to Rengstorff in the afternoon?

Just asking cause these last 2 days their have been a couple CBR or F4i's in that general area that are on their 8th life and may not make 9 lives. Don't know if thats you or not, but just wondering.

If you aren't going to lane share, dont block it for the rest of us!!

I understand that you may not be comfortable lane sharing yet, or at least at the speed that the bike behind you is doing it; and I agree you should only ride to your comfort level, but if there is a bike behind you suddenly that wasnt behind you before move to the left and let him by.

+1000000000000000000000000

i dont split when i come to a red light.. cuz i always turn of engine...
:party only split on the freeways

At night, there's dozens of headlights behind me, so I'm sorry if I can't track that one individual headlight that happens to be you.
Beep the horn, I'll find a spot to squeeze into and let you by. As I'm passing traffic as well, it won't take long.

i hate when someone beeps the horn at me:laughing... bikes or cages

If you're not lanesplitting, but you're in traffic, where is the safest place to position yourself?

Right where you'd be if you were lanesplitting. That way you have room in case sudden braking is required.

Before I read any further in this thread, I'd like to chime in with my... +1

I have only run into a few other splitters on the BB on my commute, so i havent had this problem often.

The splittlers that piss me off to no end are the scooters in the city. Some scooter, skinny pant, small t-shirt, D-bag goosed my ass on the right a second before I was about to turn right.

Only if there's no one next to you in the next lane. Otherwise, distance yourself from the car beside you and increase your following distance to the car in front of you.

WAIT A SECOND! I read this thread with utmost curiosity and intention...I goose-stepped through each post to glean AS MUCH NEW CONTENT as I had EVER SEEN BEFORE on the finer points of Lane Splitting Etiquette!!

Then I did a "Forum Search" to see if Mr. WI was right to suggest that this LOFTY rant by the hitman as a topic of more frequent discussion than I'm AWARE. You KNOW WHAT???? I found 18 PAGES of lane sharing topics!!!! Good golly. I think I need to spend more time perusing the rhapsodic waxing of the general section more often...my butt hurts...I plan on discussing this with my proctologist. Can someone ban me before I say something mean about shopping in CostCO?
