A Tale of Two (Partial) BDRs

Day 8: Sunday

We woke up a little later and less cranky, and we discussed the next steps. It's Sunday and Michael needed to get home to Olympia because he had to work tomorrow. Monte's clutch was on its last legs and he was concerned about his bike's ability to make it back to California. The weather forecast for eastern Oregon and down into Redding called for HOT and there was a bunch of wildfire smoke in Oregon. Monte decided to get a U-Haul and found one in Spokane, about an hour's ride away. I agreed to ride shotgun. But first, a very pretty ride from St. Marie's through the Palouse area into Spokane.

We loaded our bikes up into the U-Haul and got on the road late-morning. We spent the night in Bend and got home Monday afternoon. Kind of an unceremonious end to an epic trip, but there ya go. Yesterday, I cleaned the bikes and my gear and today I'm back in the office.

What an amazing trip!

The Sierra Buttes shots bring back a lot of memories of fall camping trips to Sand Pond. When I was a kid, some remnants of the old mining building were still there, along with sections of narrow gauge railroad up on the adjacent hillside. All long gone now.

We also skied into Tamarack Lake one winter, built igloos for shelter and climbed the Buttes in a blizzard the following day. The decent back to camp was epic.

Great report and photos!!! I bet your mind will be drifting back to this trip for the next week or two, one for the books.:thumbup

What is a BDR?

I wish people would stop using acronyms because a large majority don’t know what people are talking about. WTF, LOL and some others are OK, but BDR I’m clueless about.

At least spell it out in your first post before using the acronym. That way a reader can figure it out.

I don't know what BDR stands for, but what they are, are back country routes across the states and country.

So, a Nevada BDR is a route, ostensibly, that can take you across Nevada without touching much asphalt.

Backcountry Driving Routes perhaps.

They have them for many of the western states, and they're actively researched by folks bumbling out in the wild.

Back Country Discovery Routes

This is the Adventure Riding forum and so it's a pretty common acronym in this riding community. BTW - The link above was the first hit when I searched BDR in the Googles.

Edit: If you Gizoogle it you get a much different take though.

What tha fuck iz a BDR, biatch? (Definition, responsibilitizzles n' game) - Indeed

It's like BDSM...but different :ROFLMAO:

Backcountry Discovery Routes. You can check out all of the routes here: https://ridebdr.com/

They have paper maps of each one, plus GPX files to stick in your GPS to help you navigate. (Do I need to spell out GPX and GPS too?)

Glad that the original poster enjoyed the bits of the IDBDR that were covered. I've done everything from Jarbidge to Yellow Pine, but that's all. Was just up on a section last week above Lowman in my Bronco going through an "impassible" closed section that wasn't actually impossible to get through like the sign claimed:

The BDR routes get you to some beautiful mountain areas in the Western US.

Thanks for the clarification. And no, I don’t need to know what GPS and GPX means.

We have gotten so used to acronyms that they are now causing harm to clear communicating. We should resist using acronyms.

I absolutely agree with you and have always been annoyed when people use acronyms assuming that everybody knows what they mean. Sometimes the person using them doesn't even have a clue.

But I've always disliked abbreviations and nicknames. That made it hard being in the computer industry for the four decades that I did that sort of work.

The only case where an acronym is harmful is in the case where one doesn't know what the acronym means. It's not difficult to ask, as someone eventually did here. But there are a lot of situations in which people might not know the meaning of an acronym.

In a work environment, not all company cultures are safe to reveal you don't know something, so people might not ask. People might feel that way on BARF, for that matter. This time it turned out OK.

I think it’s annoying to wonder what an acronym means. And it takes time out of one’s day to figure it out, whether you do a search or ask. A few, such as LOL and WTF are OK, but that’s it.

I’ll bet no one here knows what this means: DUAA.

Not that I refer to THC much, but if I did, I’d prefer the acronym to the words. YMMV.
lol. Funny. Ditto for LSD. But FWIW, LSD, KFC, THC and BDR are not acronyms - they’re initialisms. Acronyms are things like SCUBA, LASER. Or RADAR.

And yes, this is the ADV forum (ADV is an abbreviation), so if you don’t know what BDR is, well, if you hang out here long enough you’ll figure it out…and ideally even go do one - they’re awesome.

I’m sure they are. Unfortunately I can no longer ride because of my stroke. Such is life.
