Abcde?

I'll bet when the dumb ass mother was purchasing the ticket and was filling out the name of the ticket holder, she put ABCDE as first and FGHIJ as last. It's a shit show about nothing.

My first job as a kid was working for a Taiwanese family. Their last name was Chu. They had 3 sons and they were all given names that started with the letter D. There was Davis, Dennis, and finally Dick who was the youngest. He changed his name to Michael in around first grade. Surprised he made it that long.

I put a heck of a lot of effort into naming my son because I actually care about him. If I were to name him a string of meaningless letters it would mean I thought nothing of him.

Doesn't everyone's name come from a string of meaningless letters?

I think its the other way around. Names, and language in general, come from mouth sounds. We make face noises and then use language to convey to others what face noise they need to make too. The mouth sounds and face noises are invented fisrt and then we use some type of symbols (language) so those same sounds can be shared far and wide. Its a pretty good system as long as we all agree on how to use the same sets of symbols.

If that is correct, it might be what frustrates me so much about goofy spellings for sounds we could reproduce easily if we stuck to the agreed system of symbol use.

I suppose I don't follow how that creates meaning? The sounds and whatnot are arbitrary and it's the reference that contains the meaning. The meaning came first, the spelling and sounds came second, which proves(imo) that the spelling and sounds are meaningless. So in his example, all the things that build the relationship are what create the meaning, not the word/spelling he chose. It kind of implies that if you messed up the name of your kid, then you're just going through the motions for 18 years until you can make them leave and try again on the next one.

Yeah I got no silly theories about the connection between meening and mouth sounds. Time for a real liguist to drop some science lol.

There must be a few cunning linguists on the board who could help the rest of us come to a better understanding of the relationship between mouth sounds, and the meaning behind language.

As far as naming multiple children with names that start with the same letter, it does sound possibly lazy/cheesy to me, but could just as easily be a well thought out attempt to strengthen the bonds between siblings into a cohesive family unit.

Any of y'all remember that show on Nickelodeon back in the 90s, Pete and Pete?

i listened to a radio program recently on language. they were interviewing a anthropologic linguist who was describing how language developed, and the gist of it was, language developed from the association of common elements in the environment to auditory vocalizations. words (and therefore language) evolved from a common and mutually understood meaning.

fast forward centuries, and WRT names, there seems to be a desire on the part of some to contort norms. not in the form of the unusual, but in the form of a wild departure from anything that has ever been done before.

the thing i would ask these renegades is - are you doing this for yourself or for your child?

No, you decide to be cute with my name before You earned the nickname Contrary Carl. I have pointed out earlier that ethic names are totally fair game if people in the country of origin can recognize them as a name. Fuck you are being pig headed.
Fuck me? For pointing out that your name is likely a misspelled corruption of an ancient one? I bet you don't even spell it using the correct alphabet.

And you white knighting your tops. Good to see you never change, too.

That is a very homophobic comment meant as an insult. Surprising that someone so vocal about their sex positive, alternative lifestyle would choose to "insult" someone by implying that they were a polyamorous, and submissive, gay man.

Coming on the heels of his FLAMING comment, I'd say it is in line with most of his trolling on this thread and elsewhere on the forum. It's what he does. For some reason, he seems to get a pass.

If you spread enough good will and feelings around the sink, you get a pass for being an ass every now and then.

BARF karma.
