ADV spots with great access to good roads -- Looking for input.

Thought we were talking a combo rally.

SLT is farther than a day ride for most? We are talking about Adventure riding here, right?
Adventure is what you make it. I can't wait to see how the Shiver does on a rutted gravel road. I like the idea of turning a 200 mile into a 350 mile backroads tour. South Lake Tahoe,, Fortuna, and Jackson all provide excellent opportunities to get lost in the woods.

Do I get a vote if I live just over an hour away from Downieville, Sierra City and Quincy and I’m not dirty?

I may be biased but .. Truckee 😁

Dirt, hotels, camping, bars, asphalt, lakes and rivers, history, restaurants, access, adv (The NorCal BDR runs right through here)

Downieville you have to compete with the mountain bike crowds for hotel rooms in summer.

Truckee is worth considering. I peeked at the map just now and it is a long walk to the bar, but maps don't show all. ;)
Would you come if we did Truckee?? Seems you live all over. :teeth

There is no voting at this point, but feel free to vote. I am heavy into looking at spots, the weather, the routes, the road, the bars, the food options and motels. All those things play into this and $$$ do too. Some spots will be more expensive than others. The beauty of some like Weaverville, Taft and Hawthorne is motels are very affordable (1/2 of Morro Bay for example) which I think is important.

😁 I live in Truckee, 10 years now.
I have a decent shop garage and can host repairs.
I can lead dirty or adv rides beginner to advanced (standing invite to barfers)
There are hotels downtown that are stumbling distance to all the bars and restaurants, but I'm sure they are the more expensive ones.
Truckee actually offers a free taxi service as part of our TART transportation system!!!!

I have to admit that Truckee will definitely be one of the more expensive spots to base from.
Everything here is expensive, I'm sure the hotels are, restaurants are, bars are, hell, gas is $6 a gallon in town.

Great input.. The host a ride if we did Truckee is definately a huge bonus to some folks I am sure.
Free taxi service...! Hell yes :Port

I shall dive deeper. Thanks!

I’ve been showing up at BARF motel-style destination rallies on an ADV/dual sport bike for a while now, and the way I do it is to leave early and camp for several nights on the way, or at the least camp one night. otherwise it doesn’t make sense to pack my tent. :laughing

to get to SLT or Truckee I’d probably head up Hwy 108 and cross over to Hwy 4 on dirt fire roads on Hell’s Half Acre Road, or head towards Chalk Bluff OHV from Nevada City on Buckeye Road:

the water crossing on Buckeye Road, headed towards Chalk Bluff OHV/Hwy 20.

last year and this year I headed to our Hoho/Weaverville rally by leaving a week early and headed for Packsaddle Campground to meet up with the ADV Downieville Daze people and Mr Mike catfish the weekend before the HoHo Rally. this was my route to Weaverville a couple months ago this year, guesss I slept on the ground in a tent eight nights before I got into my motel bed at the 49er:

anyway, that’s how I’ve been combining my BARF motel style destination rally experience with my ADV riding.

one year we got a bunch of rooms in Ft Bragg, and our street bike guys met us there on Saturday night for the Sheetiron 300. that was synergistic fun. :ride

I gotta do the Sheetiron next year just to see if I can. Also, I need to figure out my moto camping setup so I can keep future moto adventures on the cheaper side because camping sounds like fun so long as it isn't raining or freezing.

^^ :thumbup

yes … everything is slower—for me—adventure riding/camping. I’m slower on the fire roads, I need to find a place to camp a couple hours before dark, it takes me over an hour to strike camp and load the bike the next morning ... :facepalm:laughing

the synergy combo tri-fecta for me someday would be a BARF rally in Willows CA on a StonyBARF/AFM Thunderhill weekend.

think I sorta did that last year when we double booked Hawthorne/StonyBARF—I was able to hit Fouts Springs and hang with the plated dirt bike and OHV people around the campfire on Wednesday night and then start making my way to Hawthorne on fun roads on Thursday. :ride

Bannana Chunks is a great resource.
On the Beta I find the Giant Loop Mojave bags and hammock are my everything. For Baja we use Giant Loop Coyote bags with a fuel bag.

last time I spoke to Mr @bananachunks he'd already camped out over fifty nights this year! :hail

and speaking of synergy—I count the two Dirty BARFing StonyBARF events we have every year as part of our BARF annual weekend rally events. the Greypine group campsite it totally suitable for a street bike to show up at, (goaty) pavement all the way there. :ride

Mrs SFMCjohn showed up one year to a StonyBARF on her FJ09 (the time the NF was littered with piles of firewood and we had a colossal bonfire). :laughing

StonyBARF 19, Sept 26-29, 2024

what I love about StonyBARF is how show-up-or-don’t easy it is. no sign up, no motel reservations, $20 cheap, miles of fireroads for we ADV types, swimming and fishing, if you want, and lots of fun people. 🥳

Speaking of 108 and Truckee, anyone checked out any of the CA-BDR-North sections yet? A buddy and me rode 2,3 and 4 on GS’s a couple months ago and it was a blast. We started at a camp site near the top of 108 (Sonora Pass), then got a good morning start by riding down to 395 and got on the route just south of where 108 comes out there. Two more overnights/camping at beautiful sites recommended by the BDR crew, finishing up at Truckee.

Very doable by intermediate riders on big adv bikes. There are some black diamond sections that dual sport guys would love to eat up. Way over my head on a big bike.

There are a couple of closures/re-routes at the moment in those sections, but should be cleared up by next summer.

^^^ A couple weeks ago I rode sections 1 thru 5. Had plans to finish but we had an injured rider that we needed to reroute for. Plan to finish to the OR boarder in the spring if anyone is interested.

W.r.t. the topic, posting up anywhere between Truckee and Graeagle has my vote. There's so many good loops of all levels we could string together around here. I'm also a sucker for Fortuna, again lots of good riding in all directions but west....plus I have a soft spot for Eel river brewing.
