Adventure riding short rides and BS thread

Snow Day!!

anytwowilldo, and 1962siia invited me, and Dmitriy for a run over M1 to Covelo from Penny Pines... Hopefully they will post a few pics, but here are mine..





I was essentially running a street tire (Ok, it's kind of a ADV tire) and it works well for all the easy hardpacked M1 super highway..



Until this happened (four or five times)




We fully committed to making it to Covelo after a 4x4 stopped and said this was the worst of the snow, and it was only for about 3 miles.. They lied..







Somebody has a snazzy 1090 very similar to mine


The ice is no joke. anytwowilldo here trying to ride up the hill..



I said this happened a lot. (not me this time)

It was about six miles of snow and ice and pushed us into riding the last 18 miles on M1 in the dark.

Dima got me enjoying the sunset
 
Epic day! Glad we decided to push through! Glad we didn't know it was going to be 6 miles of that, or we would have surely turned and missed out on the adventure!

I'm surprisingly sore today. Probably from being so tense riding across the ice sheets!

Must be harder to pick up! I know mine is.

trying to pick up a bike in those conditions was the reason I resoled with Vibram when my speed-soles wore out ... :laughing

Im putting this one on the list for spring. Looks like a great 3 day trip! Did you guys camp out there?
 
No, we did a loop all in one day. Met in Rohnert Park at 9:15am. It was a 500+ mile day for the guy coming from the South Bay!

The plan is to go back to camp in the spring at some point. Lots of spots that look perfect for motocampout!

NICE! That is a long day, but looks like a really fun ride. I will make a trip here soon!

Still love the 640's (they will always have a special place in my heart as the first "dirtbike" I owned). But I wanted something that can take the freeway miles a bit easier without feeling like the motor will grenade.... :laughing

Yea definitely harder to pick up, especially if the wheels are on sheet ice along with your feet :rofl
Gotta say the 1090 fits like a glove, was a little sketched out riding that big of a bike on dirt with all that HP, but after getting the hang of the balance (ice will teach you balance VERY quickly :rolleyes) it felt just as comfortable as my 300 2T does.

You should come ride with us, promise it will be fun!!!

Nice Demitri that's cool, the ice does not seem like a good place for heavy bikes haha but it must feel good once you conquer the challenge.

$1k worth of parts/machining back from Engine Dynamics.

so, some interesting info back from Mike. the head that came off my 2017 BARF Baja KLR, which I’d done the top-end just before that ride, had oversized valves which he said are bent!

crazy thing was I maybe got close to 10k miles out of it before I had to take it out of service again due to excessive oil consumption.

that the head had over-sized valves was news to me. I’d purchased the bike used, and had put on a head that I had lying around the garage that had been to EDCo in 2014. guess I’d put big valves in back then and had forgotten about it.

figure the valve-clearance cut outs in the top of the 2017 piston must have been barely inadequate, and the piston was just kissing the valves enough to bend them, but not so much as to be catastrophic. weird.

guessing the oil consumption was through the seals of the bent valves ...?

in any event, we couldn’t source new oversized valves from Schnitz anymore, so part of the $1k was to have EDCo machine replacement oversized valves from blanks. (I’d sent the head that had come off the 2017 bike off to EDCo last month, and that’s what will go on the bike in the pic, above.)

so, the plan is to spend Feb/March in the garage getting the 2017 Baja bike and the 2019-2020 Baja bike (in the pic) running and reasonably oil-tight again, in time for April StonyBARF.

golly, I hate working on bikes ... :facepalm

That seems to be happening more to me lately, I'll do something, forget about it and then be surprised when I discover that it done. Of course it goes the other way too, where I think I've done something and I haven't, that's usually met with a disappointed sigh.

like the “assembly” view, sort of takes me out of my procrastination death spiral.

Schnitty’s stroller is awesome. a neighbor when we had the place in Berkeley left it on the porch for him. :gsxrgrl

I find I hate getting started but then don't mind the process and get to enjoy a moment of "I did that" when it's all complete. That said, I dread starting work on the DRZ a lot less than I do the Ducati, less to be mystified by and mistakes are cheaper on an old thumper.
