Adventure riding short rides and BS thread

These would make some cool cup holders maybe?

All this garage talk...I had my 701 torn apart yesterday for a valve adjuustment and new spark plugs. I've been waxing poetic about that 701 here lately and here's another opportunity: I'm an absolute HACK when it comes to turning wrenches, but Rocky Mountain ATV does a fantastic video on how to do the valves and I have the service manual. I was able to get my 701 torn apart, adjusted, and back together in a few hours. Bonus for no extra parts leftover!

The intake valves were tight and so was one of the exhaust valves. Each of the four valves had a 2.45mm shim--both intake valves got a 2.35mm shim and the right side exhaust valve got a 2.40mm. Left side exhaust valve was within spec.Spark plugs looked ok (I think?) but I replaced them anyway.

did you invest in a shim kit, or do you just get what you need one at a time from a dealer/on line supplier?

the over-bucket valve lash shims for my KLR are about the size of a quarter, and the weird thing is my ‘88 BMW uses the same shims. :dunno

interesting that the 701 service manual is available—I’d gotten the impression that we’ve moved away from the kind of paper book service manual you can keep on a shelf. :party

I like the paper manual too, and will pay premium to get one (or two)

Need to get out on the moto.. It's been locked up for too long

Reminiscing of past rides..

yes, when I’m really on the ball I have the factory manual and also the after-market Clymer manual for the same model. not familiar with Cyclepedia, will have to keep an eye out—they look pretty good to judge by the cover. :laughing

Reminiscing of past rides …

gotta couple those-were-the-dayz BARF Adventure Riding subforum pics, too:

I just sent my $170 off for the n00bs Rally in Death Valley on 03/20/24, and we have plans to go see the whales in Baja this winter at some point, and the four BARF rallies and two StonyBARFs, and the End of Pavement rally in Cedarville and Mr catfish's rally up at the Sierra Buttes, and Bungie Brent's Backwoods Bash. oh yeah, the Sheetiron 300, maybe. so that's how my '24 riding season is shaping up. see if I have a running KLR at some point, to accomplish all that.

never a dull moment ... :ride

John, I admire your dedication to the keeping the KLR’s alive, but a Versys would eat those miles with zest. :ride What an amazing ride calendar. :thumbup I’ll try to make a few of those too!

I bought a shim kit...and yeah, I have a paper manual for the 701. Also for the Africa Twin!

^^:thumbup

yeah, maybe it's late model BMW GS you can't get a paper manual for, anymore. idk.

there's the NorCal BDR trailer ... think I recognize Mt Patterson, which is a bit of a surprise, and the Sierra Buttes, of course, and maybe Hwy 4:

I wonder how much of the route will be open Memorial Day weekend?

:thumbup

'nother big storm this weekend, I guess. The BDR types are still being coy about the routes, or at least I have not been able to find any info. :dunno

the word on the street (or at the SFMC last night, ha), is we'll be missing you at the n00bs Rally this year? assuming I even manage to get there, to miss you. :laughing

I'd have to Assume Mt Patterson is a "hard split" or expert section which just means interesting on lighter dual sport bike. The folks I go on these BDRs with have suggested we try to knock the whole thing out in a long weekend, but, we'll see what the route looks like. If I'm still out of work by then it might be interesting to try to do both the SoCal and this one in one long trip. Maybe, that might be crazy talk.

yes, it will be interesting to see the route.

I can't imagine that if the SoCal BDR is something you can spend 10 days on that one could knock out NorCal in a long weekend ...? :dunno

It gets released on February 17. I'm tentatively thinking of hitting it on Memorial Day weekend, depending on snow levels. I'll do so with the understanding I'll have to go back for Patterson later in the season. I'd be down for some company! And yeah, can't make nOObs Rally his year--traveling for work that week.

Well, depends on the roads, the last few sections of the socal BDR can definitely be combined into one big day as they are more or less just fast fire roads, depends on how much sight seeing versus saddle time you want to spend, but yeah, if lots of the route is stuff like Patterson, might take a bit more time!

yeah, I’m slow, anyway. would just be super-slow with Mt Patterson. :laughing

here’s the 2024 Oakland Motorcycle Club Sheetiron 300 info … camping out at the Stonyford Rodeo Grounds with 500 of my best riding buddies on that Friday night is one of my favorite things to do:

TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGING!!

Oooo I really should do it this year, was planning on it last year before the weather had other plans... I've heard it's a bit crazy, but I'd probably just aim to start later and not be in the way of all the fast folks.
