Adventure riding short rides and BS thread

Adventure riding short rides and BS thread -

I went adventure riding and some BS happened... I'm okay.. Don't ask me what happened because I don't know, my eyes were closed.

Ouch! I hope you and your bike heal up soon!

Cabrito!!! Hope you're mostly ok.

I couldn't get away for StonyBARF this time around, but I DID manage to get a day ride into Big Sur and at 456 miles, I made it count!

Sounds like I fared a bit better than you did at StonyBarf, sorry to hear about your injury. I'm working through a sprain of some sort, but no broken bones thank goodness. Heal up man!

You too! I look to you for inspiration.

You sure did:thumbup Nice pics. Question: Was Naciemento Ferg open, or did you access Prewitt ridge via Los Burros? Was there still a locked gate on S. Coast Ridge?

N.F. is still closed. I came up via Los Burros/South Coast Ridge. I don't remember if there was a locked gate, but N.F. was definitely clearly marked as closed.

my friend Mr Dogfeathers here on BARF sent a link to a short video on fire watch towers in Northern California, which I enjoyed:

Fire lookouts keep watch over threatened forests
"There were once thousands of active fire lookout towers across the country; today, while many are automated, a few hundred are still staffed by people whose job is to watch for forest fires in remote, rugged areas, like Klamath National Forest, in California and Oregon. Correspondent Conor Knighton talks with two fire watchers who are scanning the skies. Air Date: Aug 15, 2021."

tl/dr: of the eight still-active watch towers in the Klamath NF mentioned in the vid, I've only been to Eddy Gulch, so I've got my work cut out for me, ha. :ride

here are the other seven still-active fire watchtowers in the Klamath NF, according to CBS Sunday Morning:
1) Lake Mountain
2) Slater Butte
3) Collins Creek Baldy
4) Buckhorn Bally
5) Orr Mountain
6) Herd Peak
7) Bolivar Lookout

should give my BARF HoHo Weaverville Rally, 2022, some structure ... :toothless:angel

and in the interest of completeness, one for Eddy Gulch:
8) Eddy Gulch Lookout

few more pics from my recent Thanksgiving sojourn in the Panoche Valley:

it was 160 miles from Lower Haight to my campsite.

Browns Valley Road ...

Gary856 gave me the idea to finally snap some pics of things I've been riding by for years ... this is the little empty house below Panoche Pass on J1/Panoche Road.

descending into the Panoche Hills on Wednesday night. I'm headed for the ridge in the middle of the pic, just to the right of the peak ... you can see that they've been out maintaining the road, it's showing evidence of having been recently graded.

looking back toward the entrance from my campsite ridge ...
there's a car in the pic, for scale. I posted some pics in our "Bikes on Location" thread, here, here and here.

the final pitch on road P20, climbing home on Saturday ...

heading out the entrance and back home on Saturday morning ... I told Ms Woodschick I'd look for the "no streetbikes" small print on my way out, and this pic demonstrates there's no longer any small print at the entrance. the kiosk facing the road has lost it's plexiglass, and I think that's where the more detailed information used to be ... it has yet to be replaced. I didn't look for the small print at the kiosk at the viewpoint by the restrooms at the top of the entrance hill, though.

the place was hopping with shooters on Saturday, 11/27, and while it is a beautiful and serene place, where I can get my sunrise and sunset views from the same campsite, you are sharing it with folks shooting during the day. and there is the whole risk-of-ticket-for-prohibited-streetbike issue.

as usual, had big plans to buy a day pass at Mercey Hot Springs, and as usual, I didn't do it ... maybe next time. :laughing

anyway, that's the newz from western Fresno County. have a vague plan to try Tumey Hills, or see if I can get into Clear Creek from the east/New Idria side, or just be an upright citizen and head to Williams Hill BLM for the X-mas holiday. or idk. maybe head for the Carrizo Plains, if I'm feeling really ambitious.

or just sit on the sofa. :facepalm which is certainly what I'll do, if there's rain in the forecast. :toothless

Excellent pics and write up, as always.:thumbup

John, I love the pictures! Got me planning my route there! Thanks for the inspiration! And I haven't been into Clear Creek in years so I will connect that in!

thanks guys, looking forward to seeing your pics
from Clear Creek and Mojave. :cool

Clearly I need to get out on the DRZ, seems this weather is just asking for me to plan an over night loop to go find some dirt. Great, inspirational pics all around.

I desperately need to go on a little ride a bout.

Your pictures sure do inspire John.

A nice Thanksgiving break this year.

While Sir SFMCJohn was making beautiful pictures in Panoche, I was about 20 miles away at Condon Peak for the first time:

CondonPeak.jpg

I then rolled my way over to Mahogany Flat. Last time I went (TG2018) I got turned around 0.5mi from the top by snow/ice, so stayed at Thorndike instead:

MahoganyFlat1.jpg MahoganyFlat2.jpg

Then up to Lobdell Lake. Turned away 3mi from the lake by ice, but found a great spot nearby:

LobdellLake.jpg

Just under 1030mi round trip, made all 3 targets (while skipping one - Buttermilks/Bishop), and got home early / avoided holiday traffic. Life is good!

Looks like an excellent get away! Thanks for posting and pics!

A nice Thanksgiving break this year.

So how many days camping so far this year? Have you surpassed your personal best yet?

Looks killer by the way!
