All right geniuses...

Too late now, but if this happens again you could bring them over here and I can demagnetize the entire assembly for you with our degaussers (doesn't require heat or mechanical shock.)

Isn't that similar to the device the Fantastic Four, used to try to turn themselves back normal? :rofl

This whole thread has made me giggle with delight. My first thought was that you could weld a long rod onto the nut, but I guess that would ruin it, too.
Poor nut.

:rofl
I sincerely wish I had something useful to contribute, but I can't stop laughing about this...
Really sorry... :rofl :cry :rofl
But thank you for posting this up!!!

We all came in today with a mild sense of defeat.

.....the magnets won this round.

The worst part is, I was standing there, staring at the box with the magnets in it--stuck to the door again--and realized that there are a lot of expensive educations in the room... and we got freakin' pwnd by some mindless hunks of metal. :laughing

What in the world do you have at work that will permanently remove the magnetic field from a rare earth magnet?!?

They have Carl Freidrich Gauss' mummified REMAINS there!!!

I work at a company that produces electronics for these guys:

The system is typically used for rock magnetometry to measure paleomagnetic fields in old core samples, but we've successfully demagnetized neodynium magnets with it while screwing around. Fun stuff.

Just for fun...

How big are these magnets?

this size?

or bigger

You have to slide the magnets apart, but since you have this nut stuck to them why not just tie a line through the nut, tie the nut to your front bumper of your cage then stick the magnets to that big steel beam, girder, or heck your boss'es car and then back up. You will at least get your nut back. The boss can finish the rest of his/her mess.

( just don't anything too springy for that line or you might get to buy a new whindshield.)

Or, are we talking about some star trek, warp powered magnets that were built using captured alien tech from area 51? In that case, I would call NASA.

Did you try sticking your head inside one to see what will happen? Or a small mammal? :laughing

I've tried making an electromagnet once with a car battery. It got hot. And now I'm skerrt of 'em.

We designed this glass enclosure for a private elevator into a woman's condo in a building in Nob Hill. The door is a very heavy piece of sand-blasted glass in a metal frame. It weighs a few hundred pounds at least. We need the magnet to hold open the door.
Are they so strong could they rip a plate out of a ladies head...

I
Please... this is a once in a lifetime event! :p We get up, we go to work, we make dinner and this goes on for our entire lives without much to interrupt it. You have to enjoy the little things. :thumbup

Well I'm all for playing around and having a good time at work, trust me! I also understand deadlines and was coming from my usual i/t guy over worked fed up 'just get it done' attitude. :p

I still think you should tie each end to one of t-1's many truck bumpers and let 'er rip.

Thank you for reassuring me I made the right choice by NOT going to college.
