American Rider Missing in Mexico

It's a socioeconomic. Something like this could have happened in the Bayview-Hunter's Point, Sunnydale, Visitation Valley, East Palo Alto, West or East Oakland, some parts of Hayward and San Leandro, Bay Point, San Pablo, Central Richmond, East parts of Redwood City and San Jose, and Vallejo. The ultra violence comes from years of violence steadily escalating because these groups appear to attract sociopaths and it helps them make a point.

The rural setting, read "backwoods", contributes as well to the culture of extreme violence on one side coupled with indifference on the other: these people are savages in the true sense; sadistic, barbaric, brutal animals and the locals who do nothing have no other choice than to be sheep. There may be an economic motivation for such behavior, but it's completely unnecessary and only serves their twisted ID.

Again, it's sickening.

CNN now reporting that DNA testing has confirmed that the remains are those of Mr. Devert. RIP.

Remains identified as American missing in Mexico

That report of a DNA match is being contested by the family, who claim that no such DNA results have come back yet and they don't know where the media is getting their information from.
Jackie Burrell, spokeswoman for the Devert family, said Harry's mother, Ann Devert of New Rochelle, who is currently in Mexico cooperating with authorities, has advised the family "not to listen to reports. Testing is being done."

Family attorney Darren Delsardo said the source of the published confirmations by media outlets, including the Associated Press, is unknown.

While certainly aren't looking good for the Devert family, you never know.

Harry's mom posted a few hours ago that DNA results have confirmed the remains found are indeed his.

If anyone wants to have their heart wrung out, go to the Help find Harry Facebook page and read the post from his mom. She also has a request for all of the adventurers that have been following the search for Harry...methinks I'll post up one from the mountains of Pakistan.

Farewell Harry, Fellow Rider. :rose

I think we all admire Devert's sense of adventure and wanderlust. So sad to hear the news from Mexico.

I don't want to make a direct commentary of Devert's decision making since all the facts aren't in yet but it's definitely not a good idea to travel through Sinaloa and Michoacan, especially the back roads. The same can be said about much of Central America.

Back in the mid-70s my dad took us on a road trip from SF to Costa Rica in a 1968 VW van. We had a blast. Of course, this was before the civil wars broke out in the region and before the drug gangs took over. I don't think my father would attempt such a journey today.

Tough to grasp as I was planning a ride from SF to Brazil next summer....

For what it's worth, I rode from Albuquerque, NM to Sao Paolo about 20 years ago by my self. No way in hell I would do that trip solo right now.

Mexican authorities have arrested a notorious drug gang leader for Harry's death. They mistook him for a DEA agent and killed him, really sad to hear.
Wrong place at the wrong time.

The bad guys on the left of the pic.

What an amazing and heartbreaking thing it is, to read his mom's posts. RIP Harry Devert

45 years ago.... I bicycled from Portland Oregon -to- Guatemala and back.

Now I wouldn't even get close to our southern border, let alone cross it.

Serious stupid to go onto Cartel turf. It's just reality, to have an awareness to it.

am on distribution for US state department travel warnings that my company forwards to all of our international travelers. the volume of information is staggering, and often surprising and unexpected. have made multiple trips to many places where there were significant travel warnings and restrictions (including requirement imposed by my company for armed escort), but only 2 where i had to get special written permission signed off by VP's before travel could even be booked - mexico and colombia. neither seemed that extreme to me by comparison, and with both i was like :wtf

it's heartbreaking what happened to this guy, but that said - it's fucked up, but you need to be able to recognize a dark alley before you enter it.

rest in peace. :rose:rose:rose
