Can we embed video from sources other than YouTube or Vimeo? Steps to convert video to animated GIF and upload to the cloud are rather tedious, not to mention the great degradation in quality.

Not really. Try using imgur, and .gifv, then when you embed on barf, remove the "v".

So embed whatever.gifv and whatever.gif and it will work.

On imgur, sometimes it will show up as a web.m until you open image in a new tab and then copy the image address.
