anti-motorcyclist morning show

Moike...

I knew all those KSJO parties involved personally... and it was a good call to take the steps to right a wrong. None had ill intent and I think the respolution showed that.

Thanks for the info.

Yes, John did good by us. And he was a reasonable individual to
deal with. He showed honest remorse for the actions of his
mornind DJ's. And the fact that he wanted to meet with us
personally and quickly bang out a resolution was more than
proof to us that Clear Channel actually gave a crap about how
they were perceived by what they considered an influential
listener base, ie motorcyclists.

But, we are talking about what was then a Rock station. They
knew what side their bread was buttered on.

Not a whiny Emo station, like Live 105. I'd imagine if Woody had
said something about opening his door on rollerblading iPod users
on their way to buy REM tickets, they'd be in real hot water.

But please don't think I thought John Sutherland was a great guy.
I still felt the need to go home and take about 5 long hot soapy
showers back to back after dealing with the radio bigwigs and
suits. I felt like Agent Smith trying to wash the stink of the Matrix
off of him after I left KSJO.

I think all of us did.

This is my complaint on their website:

Your radio host that has encouraged violence to motorcyclists while lane splitting puts the station in a vulnerable position.
"As an atty I'm going to encourage internet forum motorcyclists to sue your station if there are any accidents within your broadcast range - that they are a result of encouragement from your station.
Let your attys and insurance company admonish the controlling interest at your station."

Just caught the whole drama from GSXR.Com
So I'm making the following post on several Texas Boards.

"Offending Yamaha Dealer"
Hi - I work at Bay Area Yamaha as a tech and I would like to convey a message from my General Manager regarding the radio fiasco of this morning (1/12/06)

"I would first like to take a moment to thank all of you for brining this to my attention. Obviously as an advertiser, I have no control over the creative content of a show. But, as an advertiser, I do have the ability, through our advertising dollars, to make sure that radio station listens to us. I would like all of you to rest assure that this matter is being dealt with in a rapid and serious manner. I have already had numerous conversations with both the general manager and the creative director for LIVE 105. If all of you aren't too sickened by what you've heard this morning, please tune into the morning show tomorrow to hear an on air apology from the DJs and LIVE 105. Obviously the DJs who began this controversy failed to understand the gravity of the suggestions they were making. Thank you again. If you have any further comments, please email them to danlebson@otdcyclesports.com" Dan Lebson, General Manager of Bay Area Yamaha.

I've been following this from the beginning. I've sent my letters to Live 105 and FCC. I still am not sure if anyone has taken or promised steps to make amends. I do not see Woody's on air apology as having any effect on those he potentially set off as a result of his original rant.

Those that took his original encouragement to inflict violence on motorcyclists will only see his apology as a forced sentiment. For that matter, I see his apology as a forced and not genuine sentiment. I do not believe just because Woody now knows it's legal to lanesplit he has changed his feelings towards the issue.

The fact is, we need people to understand that there s a cost to advocating violence. A simple apology does not cut it for me. I do not necessarily call for Woddy's job, but I do expect the station to be active in addressing motorcycle safety on air and in the community. I do expect Woody to make an effort to learn about the motorcyling community and their issues. I do expect him to take MSF seriously.

When a person commits a crime, many judges sends the person to awareness/counseling/education courses. I think Woody needs to be sent to one. And that's be a part of the motorcycling community for a bit. That's not so bad is it? If we can't get rid of him, then make him one of us. Keep your enemies closer.

anything less is unacceptable. I would like to think he could come to understand us, to join us...

I heard about this the other day and thought I'd come check out the thread. I didn't read it all.

I'm not surprised someone was talking shit. There are always people who dislike lane splitters. I've had enough people block me, try to hit me, throw things at me or say rude things to me to know how dangerous and rude jealousy can be.

If a car driver were to open their door, there is a strong possibility the car driver would be more injured than the motorcyclist since the motorcycle really only has one place to go.

When I was a kid, we were lanesplitting (me as a passenger with my stepdad and my mom up ahead on her bike). Someone opened the door on me and my stepdad. He slid the bike off to the side, avoiding an accident, got off the bike, broke the drivers nose, got back on the bike and continued on. The violence scared me but he explained to me the wrong in the situation so while his actions were extreme they weren't entirely unwarranted.

I sincerely hope the person on the radio show is severely reprimanded (fired perhaps?). He has a right to his opinions and bitching about lanesplitters is fine but wishing other people harm when they aren't doing anything but getting somewhere faster than you is disturbing and scary.

I love the way the motorcycle community bands together. When the LA Times (herm, forgetting the name of the newspaper) put out the anti-sportbike/pro-cruiser article, it was great to hear how many people had written letters in complaining (that didn't stop cops from coming out in force for a few weekends to issue tickets to sportbikes for petty things while letting cruisers continue on).

I'm rambling. I digress.

Rarely. I try not to, I always end up making trouble without meaning to.

Has this situation been sent to the AMA or anything like that? I was talking to my mom about it and she was like, "Whaaa? Got any lawyers in the group?". (ahh, biker families ... yeah)

Hi Everyone.
I have read your Barf every now and again and never realized what a tight community this is. I love it.

I will not say anything about the comment on 105 because everyone here pretty much covered all the points to the situation. Ignorant comment, stupid DJ, should have severe consequences, and, if I see a door open in front of a biker on one of those off days I am forced to be a “cager” because I have to go to Costco… you see where this is going?…

DJ Woody,
You have been convicted of being an ignorant fool on the radio. I sentence you to ride a motorcycle to and from work for the period of 1 year so that you have a better understanding of what we face every day.

I would love to hear a judge say that.

And I believe the station should be forced to play Pro Motorcycle safety commercials everyday for as long as it takes to convince “us” that the damage of the morning comment has been rectified. It is a lot easier to push evil than to rectify it. Lets hold them responsible. I will be tuning in Monday to see what they say.

How about this for brainstorming? Have a motorcycle parade, once a year. Make it big a public, middle of SF. They have one for every other stupid issue out there, how about one for the people that save gas, space in parking lots, and free way commute.

Peace, ride safe out there

A little late to the party here, but as I work for a radio station (no, not Live 105) I may have some insight.

Writing and complaing to the station is fine, but a letter is 100 times better than an e-mail. A letter has to be kept in the public file, an FCC mandated bunch of stuff. This file is available to anyone who walks into the station during business hours to inspect. When a group challenges the license renewal of a station they look here. A whole bunch of angry letters is ammo for the challenge. This should deeply concern station management. Angry phone calls get nothing except reassuring management that people are listening, which is good for them. Whether e-mails must be kept in the public file is apparently open to interpretation.

Call and write all of the businesses that advertise on Live 105 and send a copy the station's general manager. Explain that they support a station that has advocated killing or injuring you, and that they have not apologized. Ask that they consider moving their dollars to other radio stations (I hope) or other advertising media (not so good for me...). You gotta hit them in the pocketbook, or they don't really care. That any motorcycle shop would ever advertise again on Live 105 with the current morning show is beyond me. When someone stabs you in the back and you don't at least walk away, be ready for another plunge. They did get a bunch of media coverage from it, so unless it really hurts somehow, it will have been all good for them. No bad publicity, right?

I was at KSJO during the last incident. KSJO ran a pro-motorcycle PSA at least once a day for a month after they (Kramer and Twitch) did the same thing. It didn't get them fired (sucking did, though), but it wasn't a happy time.

On the one hand it could be that Live 105's public face looks apathetic while inside the building things are, uh, tense. But until the public face shows some pain, I wouldn't be happy either. As a radio guy it usually hurts to see someone in our radio family lose their job publicly. But not always.

:thumbup Carlo Guzzi, thanks for the info.

I will write a letter to them. May be I will just copy/paste the email I sent into a word document, print it, put in an envelope and mail it out. It will probably take all of 3 minutes! :teeth

+1, absolutely everyone should do this.

I think it just needs to be stressed again what Clear Channel
Communications / Vice President John Sutherland / KSJO did
in the way of concessions to the motorcycling community back in
2001 when Kramer and Twitch pulled this exact same BS.

I had to read the dates of all these posts a few times. I kept thinking this was a repost of what happened in 01'
:wtf

:wow hmmm--this info is important enough that it should be repeated elsewhere on this forum? in a new thread? it might easily get lost in the deluge of postings here.... :confused
