Any updates on Joy Higa's and Brant Wiwi's condition from race crashes?

Wiwi,

I have heard your name over the years and I think maybe even said hello as part of some shared conversation. The reason I know who you are is the cool orange wheels you like to run, those things rock and always stuck in my mind.

Anyway you have always struck me as a dedicated worthy compettitor in our sometimes all too difficult sport.

I wish you all the best and heal quickly.

I'm definitely late to reply on this thread but I'm very glad to hear people are recovering from what was a nasty crash.

My buddy Shawn #830 caught the tail end of that crash and went down; dislocating his shoulder and cracking his scapula. He walked off the track but in pain. Don't know if he'll be racing anymore this season.

Speedy recoveries all! See you this weekend!

That's what most forum jockeys come up with. You realize it's stuck at your braking marker which usually leaves very, very little time and grabbing the clutch is not going to do much for you (just saw that someone posted my video so let me add - as you can see from the video. That was clutch pulled in AND the front brake jammed on for as much track as I had left.)

Joe, I hope you never experience it and for anyone running a Yoyodyne quick turn throttle you may want to think again

Heal up Joy & Brant

What happened to the yoyodyne throttle to cause the wreck? I have a yoyodyne throttle on my trackbike.

first of all thank you all very much for your support and concern . i am surprised and flattered . as far as the incident i don't remember anything! i am surprised to hear the recount of where i was on the track just sounds strange to me . i wish i had more answers myself unfortunately i don't remember anything from 1 hour before the cras to 1 week after
my condition is as follows broken my right hand in 4 places and has enough hardware in it to look like in alice in wonderland tea party . i have for broken ribs . punctured my right lung . i have broken 11 vertebraewhich is scary because 2 of them r c 1 and c 2 which apparently controls motor movement .luckily i haven' hurt them badly enough to where im acting any more retarded than i already did beforehand
i have also broken t 8 t 9 t 10 t 11 l 1 l 2 and l 3 also c 6 and c 5. kicker comes when i tell you about my damage to my left leg . i have severed the anterior posterior cruciate as well as mediate ligamentsthis is a major issue because the level of damages is beyond repair on all 4 ligaments cadaver parts are the only option . furthermore there are only a few surgeons that even to this type of surgery . so we are currently researching i'm still in the hospital trying to heal on all other fronts.
i'm currently still in chico i am not sure when i'll be transferred to surgery but i'll definitely keep you all posted thank you for your support it means a lot to me . a few friends have gotten together and have created a website that will provide updates for my condition as well as give opportunities for those to donate. and even win big prizes from companies that supported meand my racing .already we have companies that donated private jet liner flights to catalina and launch we have companies have donated sportbike rental and track time on mini gp motorcycles. you can donate for free dyno time. puma MOTO has offered a few pairs of gp race boots . ferodo brake tech is involved as well as other shops such as mototecnica aand west coast g p cycles and even lee's cycle. we have c t racing and PIRELLI even companies like rockstar donating products so that when you donate even a dollar you can get something in return . there will be options to even donate to the road racing world action fund if you prefer to do that .i will do my best to keep everybody informed my recovery process well as a great website like this soon as it gets launched hopefully will b by the end of the week .anybody want to talk to me feel free to call me.3109271113.

I wish you the best and a speedy recovery.

The cam and the tube are separate pieces. There are set screws to lock them together. The set screws can vibrate loose (even with red loctite and RTV) and jam in the throttle. I know of 3 people who experienced this.

solution: Desmoto Sport has fabbed up single-piece tubes+cams that don't experience this issue. I have been running these without issue for the past several years.

So it turns out I didnt' get off so easy. Looking at likely back, L and C spine, surgery, but not sure how to proceed yet. I've got a bunch of herniated discs, a ruptured disc, multiple moved vertebrae, nerve damge, etc.

Anyone have stellar recommendations on a neurosurgeon? The name I keep hearing from various people is Dr. Brian Andrews in SF. He's supposed to be the shit - and his waiting list shows it...no appt's until late September. I'm checking in for second opinions with other local surgeons who dont' have that long of a wait, but want the guy who's cutting me to be the best, if it comes to that.

I know you all are an injury prone bunch, so if you have any other recomendations, or even just a thumbs up for Dr. Andrews, I'd appreciate it.

^^ My brother had reconstructive back surgery last year at El Camino hospitol in Mtn. View. He said his doctor was the shit and one of the leading guys in that field. Let me see if I can get his name for ya.

Sorry to hear about this. ....

Yeah, major suck. Just got back my latest MRI and it turns out I do have a broken back in two places, along with the other disc and nerve issues. I guess the previous XRAYS they did didn't go down that far into my lower back. Pretty frustrating, as I thought I was ok after the crash, but things just kept getting progressively worse. Trying to stay positive and just do what I can do to get back to normal.

Wow, man... I feel pretty terrible about the way this season has gone for you. :\

He's not in the bay area but he he's a helluva surgeon.

I got to know him when he happened to be on call when I shattered my forearm into many pieces. It wasn't his specialty but he did a great job with the jigsaw puzzle. Haven't spoken to him in a couple years but at the time he was traveling out of the country every month for training on new procedures. My wife is an ICU nurse and he still has a great reputation.

Thanks for the suggestions...looking to stay in SF if at all possible, just because transport home will likely be painful, so shorter is better :)

He's on leave...and apparently only does tumors of the spine now.
