Anyone swear by Costco gas?

Fuel economy goes way way WAY down when I've used Costco gas. Like 27 mpg -> 19 mpg. Noticeable enough, and consistent enough that I decided I wasn't going to use it anymore.

I can't even imagine what you could do to gasoline to make that possible.
Any ingredient they could add to thin it out would likely cost more than the gas itself.

I usually go to costco to fill my silverado because filling up 20 gallons makes a difference and sometime i take the 5 gallon jugs to fill so i can top off the bikes.

I also asked the guy delivering the fuel to costco where it comes from and he told me the same place he gets it for chevron deliveries

100%

You are correct. I've had a friend who owned a gas station in the past who explained this to me. They all use the same base gas from the local refinery. Each company has a specific cleaner/detergent they add to the gas to help reduce deposits and such. So you're not just paying for fuel from Chevron, Shell, and the other top tier non-bargain stations.

I prefer not to use the detergents in the fuel when I have the option since I don't know what it does to the fuel lines/pump/injectors etc. The engines are designed for gasoline, not these detergents. I would rather buy a bottle from the autoparts store if I feel the valves/injectors need some attention as I don't have proof that it helps. That is something worth researching.

Correct!

Hey guys one time I filled up at ARCO and my mileage went from 40 to 3 and my car turned purple.

:wow Was this mpg before or after you did all the drifting in the Costco parking lot?

I fuel up my cars/bikes wherever (usually Chevron as it's most convenient) but I've never ran into any fuel related issues.

If Costco gas would really lead to a 8mpg drop (assuming that's even possible!), you'd hear about it by now.

Never had an issue with Mileage with Costco gas.
42 on the Connie.
25 in the Evoque.

if Arco is top tier than yeah that term means nothing anymore.

You can get 4% cash back on gas from elsewhere with the Costco Visa. Everything else gets 1% cash back.

* 4% cash back on eligible gas worldwide, including gas at Costco, for the first $7,000 per year in gas purchases and then 1% thereafter.

* Certain Non-Qualifying Purchases. You will only earn 1% cash back, not 4%, for gas purchased at superstores, supermarkets, convenience stores and warehouse clubs other than Costco or for fuel used for non-automobile purposes.

i had to drain the tank of my FZ07 after filling up at arco.thought my pcv failed or some other electrical gremlin.drained tank and filled up with chevron-fixed.

For me it was Citgo that did that.

Not even sure they're in the area anymore.

I would think a batch of bad gas could be a risk at any station, maybe it happens more often with some brands than others, but I doubt anyone could prove an issue with one vendor that happens all the time.

I actually had a friend fill up his 190E 16v at an Arco station in Fremont I believe. Car ended up taking a dump on him. After several days of troubleshooting he finally drained the gas tank to find it heavily contaminated with some sort of debris (looks like dirt) which had clogged up his system. I believe he is still in talks with their HQ.
Obviously that has less to do with the gas quality and is probably more the fault of that specific station or the tanker.

A good friend of mine would always fill his car right before heading home from Tahoe. He was convinced that the gas there gave him better mpg...

...right until we suggested that a 7,000' descent might also be helping the mileage figures.

I'm the guy that rolls up in a truck and fills up all 4 of my 5 gallon gas cans so I only have to do it once a month. :shhh

People get all excited to move forward as I finish filling my gas cans, only to get disappointed when I move my nozzle over to fill up the 21 gallon tank in my truck too. :rofl

As for the quality... no problems for 14+ years across every vehicle I've owned.
