I can't put my finger on it, but it seems odd....
13 hours? Anyone on the Jan 18th ride want to chime in about how long it actually took?
Very interesting. I was there from beginning to end. I left home in Mountain View at 9 to make the meet at 10. I got home at 10:30. I was probably the last to get home of those of us who remained till the end.
We left Chevron about 10:30 just to be sure that everyone who might have been late wouldn't get left behind. We hit the road and didn't stop until we got to Hog Island Oyster Co. When we got there, everyone dismounted and had the usual cigarettes, small talk, unwinding, and photos taken. Those who were not up to eating oysters went along to Tomales in search of non-shellfish cuisine. Before the group left, info was exchanged about regrouping after lunch.
Jimmy and I left the oyster eating group to head to Tomales to enrich our oyster appetizer experience with some sandwiches. The rest of the oyster eating group caught up about the time we finished our most excellent sandwiches. At this point, I don't know how many riders were with us and how many left. There were a few who met the whole group at Hog Island.
The ride was to end there but there was talk of riding Skaggs. Those of us who had nothing else to do, decided to go to Skaggs.
After leaving Tomales we made a gas station stop as most of us had to fuel up before Skaggs. With all the bikes and cars trying to gas up, that took about 10 minutes. Once fueled, there was a 5-10 minute wait for last minute restroom use.
We then rode to the gas station before the one lane road at the beginning(?) of Skaggs. Another rest stop and regroup. We made sure that everyone who was at the last stop caught up and another bathroom, cigarette, water break. All of us who didn't know the area had questions that we got answers to.
After Mistyz accident, those that remained were those pictured at Edels and GG bridge. I think someone who was not on the ride gathered information from the posts and created a story.
There is a few things about the SBF post that do not make sense. The author says he/she is new to the area, but has done that exact same route before. And it took he/she 6 hours. It didn't take 13 hours as the author mentioned. My total round trip from Mountain View took 13 -1/2 hours. And yet the author doesn't know the roads. Anyway...
I don't know about the author, but my trip included lunch, dinner, stopping to help a fellow rider, waiting for other riders with less experience to catch up and not get lost, making friends with a lot of new people, reinforcing existing friendships, and one hell of a scenic ride.
I think for most of us, it's not just about the ride. It's everything else that comes with it, good and bad, including people like the author of that post. If the ride was initiated under the guise of being a "hardcore" ride with no stops for fuel or food, I can see how someone might complain. But then again, that sounds a lot like a track day. I've never been to one so I really don't know.
Also if this person really took a good look at BARF, before coming out for the ride, he/she would notice the pictures are of riders taking breaks and socializing. If the author was under the impression that BARF rides were balls to the walls rides, he/she might see more action/riding photos in the photo section.
I have nothing against a challenging ride, but there comes a point where that challenge crosses the line of safety. Everyone rode at their own pace, except for Sinh, who was sweeping for most of the ride. If this ride was not challenging enough for the author, anyone there would have gladly given him/her directions to anyplace the author wanted to go. But then again if the author found our ride unchallenging he/she could have gone to the track, where the rest of us wouldn't be at risk.
