The good thing about desktops is that the components are modular. Unlike CPUs and GPUs, which get outdated relatively quickly, quality PSUs can be kept and reused for years and years.
Building a PC isn't for everyone, but it is relatively simple. If you can follow instructions from a manual, you can assemble a computer. I equate it to cooking dinner at home. It's not always cheaper, but for the same price, the parts are generally better.
