Bay Bridge Commute

I've just been looking through my Fastrak statements for the past couple of months (including October) and my bike has not been charged lately. No dirt on the plate, bent back, or tucked under. I have no issue with this.

Did nobody ride in today? I didn't see even one other rider coming into SF.

I did. Saw a couple other bikes. Lots of bikes parked where I park, though. Maybe folks are coming in earlier than my lazy ass. :teeth

I was out there!

Only saw a few folks on the bridge. It's really odd that I generally commute at the same times and certain days I see 10+ bikes on the bridge and others I don't see anyone.

I saw a lot of bikes on the BB today at 7:00 - 7:15. A whole gaggle!

Yes: about 6 Ducatis

Sorry, only a "gaggle" if they're Guzzis. :x

Traffic was bad coming home today, the surface streets near the bridge entrances were clogged more then normal. Plus there was an accident on the 24E flyover, I got caught in the traffic behind the tow trucks and the police.

Two other riders got hit splitting on 24E too. One was right after the 24 as you merge east, a black Ninja 250 (?) and then a couple miles up the road near the tunnels a guy on a cruiser got hit by a Prius. There was some commotion in the left tunnel too, traffic was stopped and the police and tow trucks were trying to get in.

Traffic's been steadily getting worse over the past couple of years, like *noticeable* on a month-to-month basis. Seems like accidents are on the rise too.

Too many people having jobs?

Too many people having jobs?

Thanks Obama :|

Yea that's possible, although it seems to get worse during the wintery months.

Btw, is this anyone here?

Sadly no, with the economy the way it is, its cheaper for me to take my car that only gets 20 MPG instead of taking public transit. For me to get from home, to work, I would need to take three different methods of public transit. I think this is the case for many in the bay area. On top of that, public transit in this city is horrific, dirty and so jammed packed as to make it a misserable experience.

That being said, I ride 4 out of 5 days per week on my Connie that gets me 35 MPG.

My DR gets around 50mpg ... I thought all motorcycles were that high!
...
I just don't understand why people want to sit in traffic all the time - even changing between 2-3 modes of transit, seems a better use of my time and money than sitting in a car in traffic. Of course, with the DR - it only takes me 18 minutes door to door (instead of 30-60 minutes of transit/walking).

Buddy of mine just told me he gets 40 MPG at 100 MPH+ on his Connie.

I'm with you, Jenn. I have always been a moto or bike/wakling/public trans guy. I wish we had more utilitarian motorcyclists in America—but motorbikes are mostly toys here. I work with a bunch of people who do ridiculous commute times from the East Bay, in a car by themselves, or leave crazy early to "beat traffic." I don't get it—I do the same commute in 25 minutes, and my toll is cheaper too.

PT is better too—even when times are longer. I used to use train time as work time, which depending on the day either gave me an extra hour of work time, or shorted my time in the office. :thumbup

2010 and newer connies have fuel maps for high fuel efficiency or high power. Mine only has the one setting. 35 MPG is what I get riding around the city and commuting. If I was on the freeway all the time I can get 40 MPG. All that being said, if you believe your buddy gets 50 MPG at 100 MPH, then I have a bridge to sell you.

LOL. He said 40, not 50. I don't know how accurate his statement is, was just sharing. :teeth

Ah good call, yes I do believe he could muster 40 MPG at that speed using the high fuel setting. However would be interested to hear if that is accurately measured, or the guages estimates.

Brent - what's your commute? From where I live, I can catch an AC transit transbay (I live near the last stop before Bay Bridge) and be at the terminal in 20-25 minutes, or BART (and I would walk from there to 7th/Townsend).

When I did take a car into SF instead of transit - I would pick up people at casual carpool (without fail - there was never a day that I drove into SF and didn't do that). I also used the 511 website link to find someone to carpool with (she had a 2-seater and lived two blocks away) - so that worked great for 18 months til I changed jobs.

Do you live in west Oakland? I've seen a dr around a few times, never knew who it was.

This morning's commute - granted, I left very late because I was in the office til after 9pm (no other motorcycles on the commute home over the BB!) ... was interesting.

After I went through the YBI tunnel - I saw some brightly colored motorcyclists... and thought "WTF?"

I got closer for a better look - four motorcyclists dressed up as Teletubbies!

And then... to my left, I saw a giant square sailed tall ship - I think it was the Hawaiian Chieftan (not enough sails to be the ARC Gloria)... but this place is lousy with tall ships this time of year...

Sup.

Missed this, sorry.

Sunset to Alameda in the morning commute. Keep in mind I have a 1400 cc motor. I can get 35-36 commuting and 40 on trips, even two up.
