Best pepper spray for self defense

Last I checked, LA is part of California. :twofinger

We all know hard it is for anyone to get a license to carry in counties like LA and Santa Clara, but did you know it's relatively easy in much of the rest of the counties in California.

I don’t think you would get one in San Francisco lol,my wife would look good with a 9mm in her purse,

Not to derail this, but what are some examples of "recreation related risks"?

Wild bears?

Boy I'd love to see the long list of "recreation related risks" granting permits in LA county.

"Why do you need a permit sir?"

"Well, I hike in the San Gabriel mountains, and the squirrels carry bubonic plague."

"Squirrels?"

"Deadly, and half mad -- take no chances with them."

Fox Labs Mean Green is some good stuff. Green dye, strong stream, and long lasting effects on target.

I'd stay away from any pepper spray container resembling a firearm.

I didn't recommend for or against, just let peeps know that it's an option. :x

FWIW, if I were to use it, I'd empty it on the perp, kick their head in, and then stick it in their hand, let LEOs determine their safety levels, I'd be on the ground with my hands out. :D

The only two you should give high consideration to are SabreRed and POM OC spray.

SabreRed supplies much of the police force and military with their spray. POM OC is kinda the new guy and have high review in the self defense community.

Be sure what you want before you get it (key carry? Pocket carry?) And be sure to know the limitations. Although it 'CAN' reach up to 12 feet, it won't necessarily reach 12 feet.

Also, there's pepper gel, and pepper spray. The spray comes in different patterns (fog, cone, etc), so again, know what you want and know its limitations.

We have a small Sabre "Protector" and a small "Halt", both fit in the palm of your hand, more or less. They are dogs sprays, but also legal for use on humans.

Bear spray is not legal for use on humans, and could lead to a large law suit if someone loses vision or smell as a result.

Also some products are available in a combo pack with a practice canister.
The one I've seen, a black canister with the actual pepper gel the other a blue canister full of practice goo.
Which brings me to my PSA for Friday. :teeth If you buy something like this, you need to learn how it works and practice with it with some frequency. Trust me, you can forget your first name and where you live when someone confronts you on the street (or in Tom G's case, a bear gets pissy with him). This isn't the time to try to figure out whether you're upwind or downwind or if it comes out in a stream or as a spray. :)

Ironic that you'd be on firmer legal grounds shooting them.

I understand your point but nah. OC isn't a deadly weapon- the use of which is a whole new ball game- and I wouldn't worry about using bear/kangaroo/lion spray (or anything else I could get my hands on) on a person attacking me.

Use of deadly force has a higher and troublesome bar that is endlessly debated by the uninformed.

I'm late to the party. I actually have a real tear gas license that I got back in the 80's?

Lol, good class. I volunteered for testing. Owned many a bottle over the years.

Tear gas usage is regulated in Cal and pretty much neutered since the 80s. You can only use a 2.5 ounce can which is way too small IMO for a combat situation. It might be a deterrent for some situations but that amount and the small streams that come out is not something I would want to rely on.

Improper use of tear gas or non-legal tear gas products can result in charges. I would be very wary in the bay area.

With that said, Bear Guard does work, i dont think you can order it anymore in Cal.

Friend was in a 2 (one in a wheelchair) on 5 situation once and had to deploy a fire extinguisher type. He rolled up, fired away and those kids had no idea what hit them. The advantage of the surprise was enough of an advantage that the two ended up on the winning side. The cloud was big, they all sucked it in. Wheelchair friend did get directly attacked shortly thereafter, and tried to use a small 2.5 ounceer to defend. It was a deterrent, but when it ran out and the attacker figured that out, he got punched out of his chair. FWIW.

order from galls.com or visit stores in Oakland or San Francisco

In California, the minimum age eligible for CCW is 21.

Dan

I'm curious about this as someone that works in psych: i've been subjected to stalking and death threats in my line of work, as often my assessments are involved in disability incarceration and divorce proceedings. A colleague of mine just had his lexus totalled by an axe wielding man he evaluated down in so cal. Wasn't a super fancy one but the perp was looking for him and his office but couldnt get inside the building. I've often wondered if CA would permit me with a CCW given the occupational risks you get in psych, particularly that I was doing forensic work (albeit out of state) before, though I am not a board certified forensic doc.

The best pepper spray is the kind with lead in it, and it doesn't go "pssssssssss" when you pull the trigger. It goes "BANG".

IMO, pepper spray is going to get you killed. There's a reason why police don't just carry pepper spray. Either get your CCW and carry, or don't. But don't show up to robbery with spray.
