Best pepper spray for self defense

I'm curious about this as someone that works in psych: i've been subjected to stalking and death threats in my line of work, as often my assessments are involved in disability incarceration and divorce proceedings. A colleague of mine just had his lexus totalled by an axe wielding man he evaluated down in so cal. Wasn't a super fancy one but the perp was looking for him and his office but couldnt get inside the building. I've often wondered if CA would permit me with a CCW given the occupational risks you get in psych, particularly that I was doing forensic work (albeit out of state) before, though I am not a board certified forensic doc.

From what I have heard as long as you don't live in Santa Clara county you have a good chance of getting one. In Santa Clara I have heard instead of shall issue it is must purchase. I don't know of any other county off hand that is as restrictive from what I have heard but I am sure someone else can chime in..

Anyone know the latest status on the case against Sheriff Smith's people?

Last I heard it got all the way up to her #2 getting prosecuted for pay-to-play CCW permit issuance, then it got quiet.

Google shows lots of paywalled Mercury articles and one NBC article is saying SJ commissioners are trying to get the AG to investigate but so far she has remained teflon.

Why haven't you guys voted her ass out already? I mean she can't be that special that no one else has a chance to be elected.

If you're motivated, and I have no idea on this specific case, but CalGuns has threads dedicated to CCW for every county.

They even have a "light green" status for LA County, which is amazing. Guess they got a new sheriff, I don't spend much time there.

But, anyway, if you're interested for your county, you may get some better info there.

Not much info of late there either. Seems people are sitting on their asses. She's got to be guilty as hell.

The best pepper spray is the kind with lead in it, and it doesn't go "pssssssssss" when you pull the trigger. It goes "BANG".

IMO, pepper spray is going to get you killed. There's a reason why police don't just carry pepper spray. Either get your CCW and carry, or don't. But don't show up to robbery with spray.

I have carried a badge for a long time. OC sucks and I don't know why people think it's going to save them. It's good for controlling livestock that have gotten out and for aggressive dogs unless the dog is charging, then you are better off with a taser (not a stun gun, which is also useless).

A lot of people don't seem to understand that OC must make contact with mucus membranes to have any effect. Assuming it has made contact correctly, you then have cook time. On top of that, there are a large percentage of people and animals that are metabolically unaffected by OC at all.

Using an area of effect weapon on an isolated target doesn't make any sense - you just saturate the area which is an issue with any place that has air conditioning. There are foams and streams however, the subject can and often does wipe the foam off and then throws it back.

Pepper spray can also affect those who use it. Determined people seem to have no trouble fighting through it.

Speaking of Tasers and dogs, I was once called (or flagged down, I don't remember) to the scene of two smallish dogs pretty viciously fighting. One was being walked by its owner on a leash. The other was a loose dog off leash who started the attack with the other dog. The owner on scene was frantic and wanted me to do something. There was no way I was getting in the middle of that fight. They were really going at it. I used my Taser and it worked beautifully. One dart hit one dog and the other dart hit the other dog. Both dogs yelped and ran away from each other in opposite directions. Perfect!

Right - using an area of effect weapon on an isolated subject. It just doesn't make sense. It is however inexpensive and very little training is required for an officer to get certification.

Barbs in multiple targets works. It effective for breaking up fights - one barb in one subject, the other bar in another subject; every time they touch they complete the circuit and you have lock up. Similar to daisy chaining on a transport.

I've seen some big and tough dogs all of a sudden decide they are not big and tough after they get hit with a Taser lol.

OC sucks in a detention setting too. It saturates the entire area and officers are usually the ones who have to clean it up. Even with a respirator on, it still sucks.

I've also watched young officers on more than one occasion play with their OC - sorta picking at the nozzle etc.. Some time later, during some task, you see tears because they forgot they were playing with their OC and rubbed their eyes lol.

OC does squat for an angry determined male. It's easy to fight through it and boot some skulls. It should be fine for the annoying variety of male though. In other words if they're just trying to give you a hard time then it should be fine. If someone is truly in the process of attempting to hurt you, you're gonna get it in your own eyes and mucus membranes while getting your skull cracked.
