BMW G650 X series input (vs. DR650)

:.................And also, I think the DR is an ok bike, for the record.

Damned with faint praise ! :mad

you are hereby officially disavowed from the DR650 fanboi club :x

Wow worse suspension than the DR, that is hard to believe haha, I should really ride a stock unfarkled DR sometime.

It's a cool looking bike, I don't think it is nearly as easy to work on as the DR650 though. The DR650's greatest strength is it's simplicity, I can have the covers and seat off in 5 minutes, probably have the forks off in 15 more. Plus it old school carb no abs no ride modes no electrical anything besides the lights and the ignition so less electrical stuff to go wrong. Air/oil cooled so there is no coolant to worry about.

The DR650 probably has more aftermarket parts readily available. Also I don't know if its like this for the X but my buddy has a F650GS (the twin) and it is a major pain in the ass looking for used parts for that thing, you'd have to get your parts from the dealer. The DR650 you can find parts ALL OVER the internet and craiglist there are just so many out there. The F650 wasn't too tough a bike to work on though.

Rambo Sur: " I know you want a 650X BMW, but... DR 650 THE BEST! (Once you throw 2,000 dollars in parts at it) WOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!"

Do you and HadesOmega ever get together and stare at eachothers DR's while slowly pelvic thrusting?

All that money you'd save buying a bimmer you can farkle the crap out of a DR650, I can't complain much about the DR650 it does what I need it to do not the most graceful but it'll get it done. Did it need a lot of maintenance, YES but if you ride any bike in extreme conditions it'll need maintenance. Did I do the maintenance myself? YES Do I do it full loaded? Yes it's a pain in the ass but you get used to it.

Mines been to:
- Baja 3 times
- Sheetiron 300
- Yosemite Dual Sport 2x
- LAB2V
- Trans Amercia Trail
- Nevada BDR
- And a buncha other shizz

:thumbup Merlin, you are the perfect example of how to use the DR. Ride significant distances and then go explore the dirt. Its a compromise bike, but knowing that..... its hard to fault it if you enjoy and use it as such. And you surely use it to its fullest.

Also I don't know know how strong the subframe is on the G650 but on the DR650 it can take some serious abuse. I beat the hell out of it and I manage to bend it in the end but like I said it took a lot of punishment because it has a steel one piece welded subframe, its bombproof. That's why I hesitate to make an adv bike out of a smaller bike like a 250 because they use aluminum subframes. Sure it's lighter but it's not stronger.

Wait...
You bent it, but it's "bombproof".

Steel vs. Aluminum is not a basis for strength measurement. There's substantially more than materials that figure in to the strength.
The DR is a very solid bike, I'm not arguing that, but you all sound like scolded children saying "but, but, but, it's better cause I said so!". "I heard from this guy that he had these problems with that bike". Let's see recall notices. How about TSB's? You guys are spewing anecdotes and opinions as gospel. You might as well be Harley enthusiasts. Justifying your bike to yourself by convincing others to follow in your footsteps.

Hey now, if a DR650 can put up with me for 15,000 miles I'd say that almost qualifies it as bombproof.

I can't believe you guys have gone 5 pages and counting over whether the BMW G650X is or is not garbage.

You're losing your destructive tendencies these days. Maybe 2 years ago you'd have a case. You love your bikes too much now!

See you on the Sheetiron!

Didn't it crack an oil line and have some other odd issue that left it down and out for more than a few weeks at a time? Bombproof my little white rump!!:rant :twofinger

We all know that the DL650 is the best bike ever created. With $800 dollars in simple upgrades it can blast across the country at 100mph, hit gnarly double track and run for 175,000 miles with just oil and valve adjustments.

OP, you should clearly just get a Wee.

The cracked oil line was not the bike's fault, thank you. :x

And yup, stator pickup coil went. Apparently that is one known flaw with the DR650s.
