Boot/shoe recommendations

I will also do it on a motorcycle and forgo the protection offered by a car.

This is a key insight. Seriously. Modular helmet vs. full face. Low boots vs. high boots vs. race boots. Textile vs. leather. Ad nauseum

I have the steel toe version, 3 yrs old and still waterproof. Would never wear lace up boots on a motorcycle though.

Why won't you wear lace ups on a motorcycle? Hip me to it. I wear mine everywhere, even dress occasions, at least as far dressed up as I get.

I considered it. They are very old, so the leather is all hard. Also, from the beginning, they have this pinch around the ankle, where the strap digs in when you buckle, and so I actually always bleed a little during trackdays...

:wtf

so u need to buy new track boots and shouldnt be wasting $$ on a pair of street boots that offer less protection.

Yup, thanks for ending the thread with that fantastic insight...:laughing

Track boots aren't the most convenient to put on for daily commutes, at least not any I have seen. I also would like to be able to walk (at least) short distances in them, without being awkward, wearing them out, etc. Price range is around $150, so also limiting.

I love when people think they just have amazing insight...

dude, stop kidding yourself on all this stuff. you only think its crap insight because u disagree, think all this cant be possible, and are being pretty stubborn when it comes to valid advice. i would think that owning boots that cause u to bleed would be a slight eye-opener... guess not.

u cant spend $150 on boots and expect them to do everything: adequate protection, long lasting, and comfortable. my Vertigo Corsas are top of the line for protection, more comfortable than u think, i walked miles in them across the UCSD campus for 3yrs which is over 1mile end to end, and they are now 6yrs old and like new after a resole. i fully expect to get another 6yrs out of them. so the only thing that doesnt fit your standards is cost.

do u honestly expect that a $150 boot can last 6yrs of commuting and mild walking around. if u bought hiking boots at Big5 for $40, do u think they'll outlast a $200 pair from REI? if i get 10yrs out of my boots for a total of $480 ($380 + $100 for resole) and u go through 3 pairs in the same time, all while having less protection... who really got the short stick??

hell, how much did u pay for your track boots that cut into your skin?? was it worth it?

Interesting. I disagree about "stubborn," since I came in thinking I would buy riding shoes, and at this point am leaning heavily towards the Cortech boots that several people have stumped for.

I do think a $150 pair of boots (such as the Cortech) can last several (not sure why 6 years is the standard) years of commuting and mild walking. They might not last quite as long as $500 Sidis or Dainese, but of course, it's about VALUE.

From what I have read about the Cortechs online, they are durable, and one guy said that they rivaled his Sidi's in comfort/protection, which cost twice as much.

I just get annoyed by posters who "soapbox" about their particular preferences and/or products, while not bothering to consider the original poster's conditions (price, etc). I don't mind, and actually appreciate thoughtful suggestions, but you seem to think that your advice is the end-all, and that anyone who doesn't agree is "stubborn." I really think it is you, and not me.

Lastly, I bought the Teknic track books in 2003 from newenough, I don't remember for how much. They are still OK, minus the hardening leather, and the squeeze on my ankles, well shit just doesn't work out sometimes. That is why I am doing my research.

this is BARF, soapboxes are handed out when u get a username. my advice is def not end-all and im sorry that you are reading it that way... but its pretty ez to see that theres a very large group of experienced riders in this thread and ALL the other boot threads that come up constantly saying the same thing.

i considered your original conditions and provided insight and an argument that your condition of cost is incorrect. u must have missed that. i even presented a "test" for protection in an earlier posts that was glossed over, something that i found to be very useful when comparing boots years ago, but no matter. you bring up the term VALUE, but based on all your posts in this thread i have no idea what value means to u; i wont attempt to extrapolate an answer to that, esp since it seems to be very diff from what i value.

Well again, interesting. The main recommendation from this thread was the Cortechs, and after some online review, they seem like good boots for great VALUE (obviously $/protection and durability). In other words, I don't see the "large group of experienced riders" saying the same thing you are.

I will re-check this thread for your test, thanks for posting it. Regarding "end-all" advice, if your advice isn't meant to be such, why post (twice, by the way) the end/thread nonsense? Pretty easy to misconstrue, wouldn't you say?

:laughing. /thread is a means for emphasis, just like the :wtf... and the thread never ends after that :p

9 years on Barf, and still didn't know that...:laughing

More seriously, checked your flex test, but tough to know that without trying on boots first. Didn't see your "value" test, unless it was the one on this page about 6 year durability, etc? Anyway, thanks for the insight.
