Occasionally, movie makers have good taste in motorcycles:

Another update: Charlie told me he's finished the wiring, and the bike will be done next week.

Next week is now: It's alive!

Went by today to drop off the tail section, so now we know what it will look like:

And just now, he called me up and started the bike--says it sounds great with the Jemco exhaust. Gotta go get it registered and I may be riding it next week!

Sweet!...:thumbup

Wow Gabe, my old Cb350 never looked anything at all like that sexy beast!

Congratulations! :thumbup

rad
may i suggest doing some facial stretching prior to the first ride, as you don't want your cheeks to cramp from the ear to ear grin you're going to have. perhaps schedule a face massage for later in the day. you won't need to pay for the happy ending, you'll have had it already

Just got this email from Mr. O'Hanlon:

Gabe!
Tried calling, no answer phone?
Hey! Today is the day! I just test rode her, and though my wrist is killing me, I had a big grin on my face, especially climbing up hills...
You gotta come back for side stand tail and brake lights, and the horn.
And to bring me parts!
I'm here till 7-7:30
COME ON DOWN!!!

A very vindicating part of all this is that Charlie was very impressed by how well the bike handled and braked--sounds like the weight reduction program and quality suspension bits helped a lot.

Trivia Question!

Who can guess how much the bike weighs now? Stock, these bikes are 375 pounds (claimed) gassed up. I think it's 310. Closest guess gets a CityBike t-shirt (I have women's sizes now, so ladies, don't be shy).

And now some pix of the almost-completed ride:

There is something so right about a 7-inch headlamp and clip-ons. I need to replace the fork tubes (these are pitted), and then I'll use the stock CB400F dust covers over the fork legs.

I'm not 100% pleased with how the exhaust looks. If I really hated my neighbors (or all of Oakland), I'd cut that muffler off at the weld just behind the footpeg for a motoGP look.

Charlie likes the clean, empty look behind the air filters, formerly occupied by 30 pounds of plastic, lead-acid battery, wiring and pot metal.

yeah that pipe is hurt..maybe double pipes out back also, I think would look good chrome.. also put the knee pads back on the tank

Looks awesome!!! I hope our CB360 build goes half as well!!

Yeah, I wanted the double pipes...but the Jemco 2-into-2 is for the CB350...ironically, this is actually a CL350 frame. I don't know why Charlie gave me a CL frame and not a CB. I think it's just what he had lying around. Oh well. As for chrome, I was wanted to keep it as chrome-less as possible, but yeah, it looks pretty drab. The good news is Jemco systems make really good power. Jon Easton builds for racers, not the bike-show circuit.

The tank rubbers are too dried up to get back on! I'm going to try dipping them in very hot water and hope they stretch enough. Charlie says it may be the new paint is too thick. I may have to trim them a bit and use spray-on adhesive or a shitload of double-sided foam tape.
