Which bike looks better?

So at the start of this project (http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showpost.php?p=5544909&postcount=1) this bike was my inspiration:

Here's a nice shot of my bike from yesterday:

I like their exhaust better, but I couldn't use that model, even though they are both Jemco systems--my frame is a CL350, not the CB, so I had to use the 2-into-one. But at least I don't have those long muffler brackets on my bike. His rearsets also look nicer, but mine are cooler, since Charlie made them custom. I like the blacked-out look of my bike--I think it looks lighter and more menacing, and the bodywork blends with the frame better. Also, the Nisky Garage bike's blacked-out motor don't look right on a vintage bike. And the painted headlight bucket is a little Nancy-boy for my tastes.

I think, aesthetically, I did a better job. Funny, as it's almost the exact same bike. What say you?

the only thing I like better on his is the red paint job, but only cause I am partial to red. the engine on yours looks better, and I agree with the polished engine looking much better on yours. I also agree that your bike is better with the front fender, I dont like the one without it.

I had an old cb350 for years I always wanted to restore but didnt. yours is so sweet!

So I've never ridden a CB350, except up and down the block for photos--do they suck?

i think yours looks better.... except the exhaust :p. i like your engine, shocks, and the disc brake much more than his. awesome bike

The electrical system is not designed for the headlight to be on during the day. Don't run it with the headlight or your battery will get drained heavily

And the winner is...

Guesses:

Stormdragon: 327
Auntiebling: 296
1footdown: 322
Tydie: 314
Z3N: 330
Killfile: 320

To weigh the bike, I found a plank with about the same deck height as an old bathroom scale, which I checked for accuracy by weighing me on it and my digital bathroom scale--accurate to a pound. The method is to roll the bike onto the long plank, then put the front and then rear wheel on the scale and add up the weights.

I weighed my Street Triple (with full Leo Vince system) with an empty tank and got 397 (add 4 gallons of gas and you get about what the magazines get when they use their fancy scales). Interesting how much front-weight bias is on that bike! So I figure my method is accurate.

Front wheel: 161
Rear wheel: 162.

323 pounds, so 1footdown, please email your mailing address to me so I can send you a t-shirt (unless you'd rather have a year of CityBike, in case you can't pick it up locally).

I'm a little disappointing! I was expecting to get down below 300. Short of building a new frame, I can't think what else I can trim.

You could lose some weight.:twofinger

:party

i missed the part where the winner gets to ride wheelies for a photo shoot..:ride

Yeah, I missed that part, too...well, I wouldn't say I missed it. Seriously, this thing makes maybe 25 hp, so good luck with that.

How did you guess so closely, anyway? Do you work at one of those guess-your-weight booths at the fair?

You could lose some weight.:twofinger
That's a low blow, man...I just had a baby.

Best Guesstimate Math. Something like this...

Stock, these bikes are 375 pounds (claimed) gassed up.
formerly occupied by 30 pounds of plastic, lead-acid battery, wiring and pot metal.

I know I saved at least 20 pounds with the wheels alone.

approx. 375
- approx. 30
- approx. 20
____________
approx 325

give or take 2 pounds on each value = 319 to 331 pounds.

then using the 3 guesses that were posted before me, you at 310

it weighs 327 pounds. :thumbup

317lbs for the win!

310 means that you think it's lighter than 327 (since gave us the numbers, 375 for the bike, 30 pounds of pot metal, plastic, etc., and 20 for the wheels) but weight savings are (in my limited experience) never as much as we hope for. So 310 was too low for me.

and 317 is below my calculated low point of 319. So 317 is too low for me.
327 is too high for you, even though it's within my calculated range.

therefore, between 319 and 325 = 322 or 323!!! I picked 322 to to side with you on the lighter side!

Yeah! It's disappointing, since every choice I made on this build was to save weight. You didn't figure the weight I saved with:

Fenders
Turn signals
tail light and bracket
footpeg brackets
center/sidestands
Exhaust system (and that must be huge!)
seat and passenger pegs

My theory is a gassed-up CB350 (oh, and my bike had a full tank, about 3 gallons or 21 pounds) actually weighs over 400 pounds. Honda is lying like a rug when it says 375. No effing way.

Yeah, I don't have the experience with these bikes to know what the parts weigh, so my guess had much less variables to throw me off.

and I don't really know how to wheelie anyway! (except for my buddy's SV650)

Gabe, it looks great. I do think it's funny you nitpick your inspiration for having a on-vintage look blacked out side case but do not hesitate to black out everything else on your bike, including the rims!

Hurmph. I thought we were talking DRY WEIGHT!

Nice work either way... both on weight shaving and weight guessing.

It is funny. I guess my thinking is blacked-out wheels look cool no matter what, but the blacked-out motor looks too modern. Note I did use a chrome headlight and brackets...
