Build Thread: CB350 Cafe

Hurmph. I thought we were talking DRY WEIGHT!

Nice work either way... both on weight shaving and weight guessing.

Sorry, I should have said wet! But I was talking about the CB350 claimed wet weight, so...

If you had to put a price on that baby, what would it be? :)

I don't know...an excellent-condition, perfect-running stock CB350 is probably only worth about $2000-$2500. My bike is so heavily modded it would be of no interest to a classic Honda collector, as he could build something like this too. I worked a lot of industry deals to keep costs down, but I am in this out of pocket about $4000--I think without the help I got from all my industry friends it would be closer to $6000. The paint alone would probably cost $1500. The irony is that I thought I could do this for under $3000.

So if I had to sell it, I would probably ask $4000, but I don't think I'd get more than $3000, unless I'm underestimating the value of a bike like this. I browse the Craigslist L.A. ads a lot, looking for cafe racers down there, and I see bikes like this priced at $5000 or more (way more) sometimes.

In any case, I'd lose money if I sold it, so I guess I'll have to keep it forever!

woot! T-shirt today! I swear, for the life of me, I cannot ever get my T-shirt size correct (it's a bit big)! But freakin' cool CityBike T-shirt. Thanks, Gabe!

Very cool, thanks for answering! You shouldn't ever sell it. It's too cool.

So I've never ridden a CB350, except up and down the block for photos--do they suck?

You must be kidding right? An RD350 it is not. But think momentum. :)

Curious: what did you do for a taillight? I saw an interesting one on a cafe'd EX250 that I saw today, a small tube just below the tail. You can kinda see it here: http://lolinter.net/250cafe/IMG_0193.JPG under the end of the subframe

I haven't mounted it yet, but I bought one of these on Amazon:

We will weld it to the subframe. The curve of the light perfectly matches the curve of my tailsection.

Bike looks spectacular. Design and performance decisions were spot on. I bet it's a blast.

Hey, I'm going on a shake-down ride down Redwood road right now, I'll stop at the parking lot where JoMo's memorial ride started if anybody wants to check the bike out or say high or just have an excuse to get away from the house and or baby or whatever for a few minutes...

Looks like i'm late seeing this build....but looks like it came out NICE!!
But then again....i'm kind of partial to the CB350's.

I like their exhaust better, but I couldn't use that model, even though they are both Jemco systems--my frame is a CL350, not the CB, so I had to use the 2-into-one.

The CB and CL frames are identical.......any of Jemco's CB exhaust would have worked. The Jemco 2 into 1 exhaust I have on my race bike, was orginally a street setup with a muffler. Its now setup without the repackable silencer and is an open exhaust. I might have some pics of the exhaust before I modded it.....would looked great on your bike. Looks more like a modern sportbike exhaust.

Here is the exhaust prior to it being redone:

Bike is VERY loud with open exhaust!

Nice of you to drop by, Ohio! I looked at pix of your bike many times while I was building mine.

Funny about the exhaust--I wonder why Jon Easton said the two-into-two wouldn't work? I took him for his word and ordered the 2-into-1. Did you mod your muffler or did it come from Jemco like that? Note that mine has a different bend.

Yeah.....your bend is completely different, mine came that way. The only thing I did was remove the baffle, cut down the end cap and welded it the muffler body. Here is what the pipe looked like originally.....unmolested(on a different project).

The 2 into 2 exhaust he makes for the CB(NY high school build) and used by alot of racers would look great on your bike. Anyways.......just wanted to drop in, say your bike looks great.....and give you the info I had on my exhaust.

Greetings from a Zombie thread! Two things...

-Mods, can you move this to vintage?
-More than 2 years after I "finished" the project and had a "running" bike, I'm at the point where I feel the bike is fun and actually rideable...I've been enjoying the weather this week! More updates to come.

You got it. :thumbup

So at the start of this project (http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showpost.php?p=5544909&postcount=1) this bike was my inspiration:

Here's a nice shot of my bike from yesterday:

But at least I don't have those long muffler brackets on my bike. His rearsets also look nicer, but mine are cooler, since Charlie made them custom. I like the blacked-out look of my bike--I think it looks lighter and more menacing, and the bodywork blends with the frame better. Also, the Nisky Garage bike's blacked-out motor don't look right on a vintage bike. And the painted headlight bucket is a little Nancy-boy for my tastes.

I think, aesthetically, I did a better job. Funny, as it's almost the exact same bike. What say you?

Quoted, so folks won't have to search old posts to find it like I did.

Nice.

But. No fenders? Have you gone hipster on us Gabe?

Oops, sorry, didn't see that little thing perched over the front tire....

It's got a front fender! And I'm going to do a rear fender of some kind.

I'd like to make a note that I started and planned this project before the hipster thing got so out of control.

hey Gabe,

yes, your bike IS 'better' in the areas you noted

please forego the flat sheet rear 'fender' so easily/commonly done,
and incorporate an elegant, roundy shape down the center of said sheet instead

imagine a shortened section from this f'glass bevel Ducati replica:
