"Burning Man 2017" Caution: May Contain Burning Man

Couldn't you also say that about cans, bottles, paper, BBQ's...

No, because they aren't going to reuse trash. The bikes are there because the event is supposedly in perpetua, I guess. It reminds me of all the Rent-a-Bike mentality these days. They are there for everyone to use....I'm just guessing that's the deal.

I dunno. You guys sure seem very rigid about it. I'm the conservative type that wants nothing to do with that bunch. Ha.

But the event is explicitly not there in perpetuity.

Odd to hear a conservative who is in to littering.

Editing in: Okay, I found it. It's officially NOT okey-dokey. I stand corrected. They are just lazy, polluting worthless hippies that probably wear those toe socks that Eldritch hates. They should be shamed on Facebook and beaten by Antifa thugs.

"Love ‘Em… and Please Don’t Leave ‘Em

"Leave no trace. A bike is a BIG trace. Somehow it’s become a common myth (playa legend, perhaps?) that it’s perfectly acceptable to leave your bike behind upon striking your camp. Nothing could be further from the truth. If you pack it in, pack it out!"

Well, you know, everyone fits into boxes and has the most predictable behaviors. Like how all non-conservatives love Burning Man and wish they could all go and get sandy and naked.

Aren't there slab cities in the desert that are just filled with all kinds of junk?

Really, I'm not passionate about defending the Burning Man event or people, but it seems like in every other way but this, they are very conscious of their footprint, leading me to believe that this is a consciously different thing not a hidden hypocrisy. Don't they have some big cleanup party the day after? Thought I heard about this and figure this is when that picture was taken...They even got a special name for the trash...have to look it up....

But maybe they are just "slipping" and getting as lazy and polluting as everybody else? If so, bombs away with your sanctimony. If so, then I am misguided in thinking otherwise. Entirely possible.

If that pic is viral, which is likely, maybe the ethos will change.

Editing in: I found this page but there is no mention of bicycles...

Burning man of now is not burning man of the past.

It has become corporate, run by a corporate person and attended by many people who would have never thought to go 10 years ago until it became hip and star studded.

As such, past behavior doesn't predict current and future behavior.

Right, They are worse than hippies. They are greedy consumers who have co-opted peace loving clean-energy dirty hippies and are delusional. And polluting.

That settles it. I am NOT going to Burning Man next year. Snert.

Man I really miss the old days.

(Actually, I am old enough to remember the first few Rainbow Gatherings, which I believe are the precursor to burning man dealios. Didn't go to those either)

Surely breathing that alkali dust for a week isn't healthy either.

Wow leaving 4-5k bikes behind is pretty f-ing shocking I must admit. There used to be an understanding that local kids would get bikes left behind a long time ago, I wonder how many of those bikes got left because they figured it would go to someone who needed it, as opposed to bikes that got "lost" or "borrowed" during the event.

Those numbers seem to say that 1-13 people left a bike behind. That's some impressive irresponsibility! Plus people pimp out those bikes with lights baskets fury stuff etc. Wow!

I bet that a bunch of them end up back at The Crucible as teaching tools for people to learn to weld bike frames and then go to their annual bike sale. That's a good thing - but that's a huge amount of legwork to get them back to the bay area, and assholes should be more responsible.

5 k bikes left in only one year?
I know that in past years abandoned bikes were collected and refurbished and resold to burners the following year. That program may have ended

Collected != abandoned.

But the new crew of 'festival goers' doesn't know the difference.

Though some of them were stolen. But 5000?

(BTW, they've all since been collected and will be reused.)
