Heh. You should try moving to Nevada, getting NV plates and then coming back to the bay area the next day.

I couldn't believe my eyes. Here I am cruising along with traffic at 80mph but people see the NV plate and have this insane desire to cut directly in front of me (requiring swearing and braking). I mean, old ladies in shitboxes are exceeding the limitations of their vehicle by 110% because they... must... cut... in.. front... of... the... NV... guy.

Get into the other car with CA plates still on... back to normal. Get back in the NV car... people go crazy.

Heh heh heh. I commute Sf to Palo Alto every day on 280. There's always some idiot sitting in the left lane doin' 60. But it's a strange thing Suzanne & I noticed. Even when it's empty (we came in at 5am yesterday & 7am today) there are groups of cars all bunched together. I don't get it. The WHOLE freeway is virtually empty, and there's 5-10 cars all going 65, right next to each other, even tailgating each other! Hell, I want as much space as possible between me & the other idiots on the freeway at 4:30am, that's for sure!

That's right - if you are not passing, or at least QUICKLY & continuosly overtaking another vehicle then get the hell out of the left lane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HAHA! This is the funniest flame thread, 'cause were not flaming each other, we're flaming on the real enemy: dumb cagers. I don't care for slower drivers in the left lane, because I'm a slower driver (but I still stay out of the left lane). The drivers I really hate, are these types, and I catagorize them into two groups:

1. Minivanimius Cluelessinus
2. Toocooliticus Dopeheadimus

The No.1 type seems to like to talk on the cell phone, tailgate, change DVDs, slap their kids, do their make-up, and dig around for toll money all at the same time. This type of driver should take their car to a mechanic, because it seems that the blinkers don't work since they never come on. This driver's most important muscle in their body is the neck, and they would never dare to strain it in an event they actually look over their shoulder or check the rearview mirror. Beware the signature Jack-In-The-Box antennae ball on the beige minivan. This one is deadly to the motorcycle rider.

The No.2 type drives a more sportier car than the above mentione like a BMW, Audi or Mustang. Obviously they have been to racing school, because it is there you are taught to put the seat back as FAR as possible and steer with one hand poised over the top. These are new racing techniques, and are used when approaching the oh-so-intimidating motorcycle rider. Almost all modern sportbikes can do 0-60 under less than 4 seconds. Not according to this driver. Let's just say you're cruising at a normal motorcycle speed on the freeway, this is the best opportunity for this driver to haul ass by you, arbitrarily changing lanes to show how fast they can really go! They look so cool, I almost want to crap my pants. I like it when they sit REAL low in the seat. They go faster that way.

Us motorcyclists are just biased. Competent riders have an extra sense that the general public doesn't have, and most of us can scan way further and judge distances better than those cocky cagers out there can. In the end, we can't judge these morons; we are just far too sophisticated and a more evolved human than they are.

I completely disagree - deliberate blocking, deliberate speeding up to prevent a pass is intentional. It is a completely intentional, however, completely AUTOMATIC / NOT PRE-MEDITATED. It is just that the f'ing arsehole people that do it don't even realize what they are doing because they are likely to busy beiing blanked out / without thought due to their total idiocy.

Yeah, I believe some of it is blocking, but I think that 90% of the people out there are brain dead and don't even think that they ARE causing a blockage.

Example - people who drive on 280 will know this phenomenon...

Sit in a middle lane, doing, say, 70-75. Someone quicker will eventually catch up to you. Even tho there is NO other traffic in site, they'll slow down and sit there. Try speeding up to 80. They stay there. Try slowing down to 65. They stay there. Try getting all the way up to 90 and SOME will wake up and realize how fast they're going and 'disengage'.

But this part is bizarre - just change lanes - don't speed up or slow down, just change lanes and it's like the umbilical cord is broken and they carry on their braindead way without you.

But yeah, some assholes just sit in the outside lane and really don't care or actually enjoy blocking you - coming back from Santa Cruz today was like a textbook on asshole drivers who insist on trying to overtake the big rig which is going 40mph on a corner, when they themselves are only willing to go 41mph... then they don't even pull over when they've passed it, and they're STILL going 41mph.

Oh yeah SV, that's right - very amusing in a reassuring way. Meaning it is nice to hear all you folks vent about this topic because I have completely had it with all these morons.

I do believe that we can and should judge these idiots - they are f'ing infuriating and are this way due to their absolute incompetence related to the skills and strategies involved in safe quick transportation. They should be judged and when found to be guilty lose their license and have their car (or motorcycle even!!!) BURNED - right in their miserable suffering little faces.

you know the main reason we have speed limits is not for traffic safety but for smog control? Our legislature has debated increased speed limits but environmental factors are keeping them down. They would even slow us down further to cut down on pollution if it were plausible. It's just funny how the speed limit is also so much of a revenue generator for the state. If they were to actually start enforcing 'safe' driving they would be able to generate even more money but then it gets more risky for many of our politicians, hence our current system.

Now if only ppl would learn how to drive it'd make commuting so much more pleasant. Too many ppl who feel that they own the road or are just oblivious to whats going on out there.

I have had it with tolerating others complete lack of ability. I am not per fect and never will be, however - I sure do identify and implement areas of improvement in my life both personal, professional and certainly moto oriented. All these ^&*^%#'ers that have no interest, let alone ability in making some useful change in their behavior should just get the hell out of here.

This whole thread has demontrated that I am an opinionated, aggressive, intolerant individual - well if you knew me you'd know that, well, hmm - that I am really a relaxed, peaceful, happy person most of the time.

I think this thread has hit every driving behaviour that pisses me off.
1- Attention: the No 1 lane is for passing or warp speed. If you are going less than 70, move the fuck out of the way!
2-If you are going to pass... do not sit in my fucking blind spot for five minutes thinking about it.
3-The ever popular "Sonoma County 101 rolling road block"; where you have some jackass who goes the same speed as the car next to him on a 2 lane highway for 5 miles, oblivious to the fact that everyone behind him is contemplating his murder.

You have a nice day also - the point is that in a legislative debate I would bet / guarantee that the last thing defeating a move towards increasing or eliminating the speed limit is enviromental factors. There are far to many other issues that are at the top of the pile for use in that regard. ie: traffic safety, roadway condition, driver skill, vehicle condition, etc... enviromental factors are not a relevant issue in this area - enviromental factors are a important issue in my opinion and certainly should be dealt with in a more serious manner - just not realated to speed limits.

Although, if California really wanted to help with smog they'd reverse the reg fee's so that older cars either need to pass strict emissions or pay larger reg fee's than newer cars. They should enforce ticketing those smoking shit-boxes that rattle down our the roads too.

Have ridin passenger with few drivers. Who by habit just go into the fast lane and stay there entire time. Does not matter their going slower. In fact because their going the speed limit, they are angered people are passing them.

Dude, that's my Dad! When I drive with him, I'm always yelling at him - "Move over! Get out of the fast lane!" He usually just lets me drive so he doesn't have to listen to me complain.

Speed limits have remained basically unchanged in the last 30 years. But Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) has steadily increased. Speed limits don't have a lot to do with fuel economy and reductions in pollution. Today's 50 MPG cars were unheard of 25 years ago. All things being equal, the vehicle traveling at 65 MPH will be more mechanically efficient than the one going 25 MPH. The politicians that impose slower rather than faster limits are influenced by a lot of factors and lobbying groups. More people die at 35 MPH than at 55 MPH. So it isn't safety, either.
