Cars that make your jaw drop.

In the 60's you couldn't see across the bay if the wind wasn't howling that day.
Been there. Went back home.

IDK if they are nonsensical.

I'd hate for all cars to spew as much crap out of the tail pipe as most old muscle cars.

I don't even mind the annual, "we want to give you $1500 and crush your car" letters I get from the Bay Air Management District on my 1994 Miata.

I just toss them out.
Non-sensical as when they actually used the sniffer my car was 90% under the allowed amount of emissions they said I could have but yet they failed my car on visual for the wrong paint on an air cleaner. If it runs clean enough why give a shit about paint color or if I have an enclosed air cleaner or an open 360 air cleaner. that makes no sense not seeing the forest for the trees.

Well, that is indeed pretty dumb.

Could have been the tech being a dick. You sure it wasn't for not having the emission label on the air filter housing, not just it being the wrong color?

nope he specifically stated it was ford blue and I drove a Dodge so he failed me. rattle canned it black and took it back and they passed it. got home took that stupid shit off and put back the 360 degree air cleaner. Back then the laws were a farce not sure if they have gotten more common sense but knowing bureaucrats it hasn't gotten better.

More Cars that make tires spin….
Haters gonna Hate….
For the record the FJ has a small block Chevy 350….
C-10 Big Block 454 ….I tossed every letter and attempted purchase for crushing this for Smog credits.
The Ford truck probably contributes to pollution from burning tires off then exhaust emissions……

That's pretty lame. I don't know if I'd say a farce, because they have definitely been beneficial, but there could be more flexibility imo

At this time anyone who doesn't understand or acknowledge that parts of California would be entirely unlivable without our stricter emissions laws is being willfully ignorant.
Does that apply to the entire state? No, of course not, but neither does annual smog inspections.
Leno's law as initially proposed would have been a great fix also

Leaded gasling for automotive use was outlawed in mid 90s'. That alone likely had the largest contribution to our clean air. Of course MTBE into our water supply, lakes and reservoirs was probably the worst state "advancement" of the the last 50 years. We'll probably find that the auto engine on/off at stop lights is another of the worse ideas for emissions.

IDK if auto on/off for increased MPG (and arguably lower tailpipe emissions) falls under what I would consider the normal tailpipe sniffing emissions rules.

Agree 100%, the visual vs actual tailpipe rules are bogus.
But carb knows that it's easy to temporarily cheat to get a clean tailpipe for a test, hence the visual requirement to try and keep us on the straight and narrow.

The 1984 landcruiser I had incorporated miles of vacuum hoses and odd hokey devices to try and run clean.
I could LS swap it and keep an EVAP system and add cats and be way cleaner, but no.

Yeah, I ran into the whole oil / spark plugs issue with a low mile 2009 Traverse I bought for my GF's son's, GF. (that's hard to type correctly).

It was ultimately outlawed in 96 but the phase-out of leaded fuel started in the 70s and by the late 80s it was pretty much non-existent at gas stations. There is a strong correlation between the phase-out of leaded fuel (and paint) and a marked reduction in crime beginning in the mid 90s. I don't know how extensively that theory has been studied, but it is known that lead exposure in children causes issues with brain development.

Cars that make the tires spin.
This one is smog legal ……
Geez 🤪
It can run on pump gas
